They sell a drink in the store in Thailand made out of that bird spit nest and they lock that stuff up like Fort Knox. I came walking down an aisle and the girl stalking the case instantly shut the glass doors and locked it as I came near like she was worried I was going to steal some of it. I explained to her that I'm not Thai and that if she offered it to me for free I wouldn't drink it.

not much of a "keeper" of Borneo if over-exploiting these birds' nests has decimated the populations in his area. this documentary is a cautionary tale of greed (from China, top consumer of the nests) and unmitigated encroachment into the natural world.

At 50, with a Father who was deep into back-woods canoe-camping (Nova Scotia, Canada), I have several fond memories of my family, along with three others who we were close to, going on trips that were at least two weeks long. No such thing as camera-phones, sat-phones, just a bunch of canoeists with a dozen kids. If someone broke a leg or got Giardiasis (beaver fever) shit got real. On more than one occasion my Dad had to stuff a Gravol suppository up his best mates ‘ahem,’ and/or fashion a makeshift stretcher out of maple suckers, because there was no such thing as “wifi.” For the love of God, please, save your children from the social-retardation/isolation of “social media” (how ironic is that name?), and send them to summer camp. And if you can’t do that, at least put the camera-phone down and be in the moment with your children. Roles reversed, I’m confidant you’d want your parents to do the same. It breaks my heart that remembering these moments brings me to tears, because it only magnifies what so many others never had what I did.

The same people buying the nests are the same that are planting palm oil, just despicable humans
