Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has claimed that Europe is “in an era of rearmament” as she laid out plans to strengthen the continent’s military capabilities with a cash boost of up to €800 billion.
Von der Leyen was speaking in Brussels as she presented a five-part plan for the future funding of Europe’s defence and the provision of “immediate” support for Ukraine after Washington announced overnight it had suspended military aid to Kyiv.
“This is a moment for Europe, and we are ready to step up,” von der Leyen said. “We are living in the most momentous and dangerous of times. We are in an era of rearmament.”
