"Alchemy" stands 28 feet tall beside the newly renovated Nextec building in Birmingham, Alabama. The sculpture honors the steel making heritage of the city while celebrating the two leading, growing industries in the city; high tech electronics and medical technologies. The lower portion is a classic Bessimer Furnace made of Corten (weathering) steel, rolled H-beams, and a cast iron gear, originally used to rotate and pour the newly purified steel. These furnaces emitted enormous flames, and the two flames represent each of the new industries prevelant in Birmingham.
The bodies of the flames are hot-dip galvanized. The symbolic features upon them are powdercoated stainless steel.
