Can you imagine wearing a heavy clay plate in your lip like these women? They are so strong! The women told us they wear these as a symbol of beauty and social status.
The Mursi are located in a remote area of the Omo Valley of southwestern Ethiopia, with a population of around 10-20,000. They lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle centered around cattle and agriculture, and the men are armed to protect their livestock and territory. Because of this and the disputes with other tribes, they have been nicknamed "the most dangerous tribe in East Africa."
However the Mursi tribe members we met were super welcoming, sharing their food with us and telling us about their culture. They have such a unique culture and we were grateful to learn more about it!
We will share more about the Mursi tomorrow!!
