For context, the world record was 19.72 just 1 month before this race, when Johnson himself lowered it to 19.66.

Got to love all the camera flashes going off at the start! You just dont see that these days, sadly. It looks amazing and really sets off the spectacle 😎

The greatest 200m win ever but ALSO the greatest description and commentary from Australian legendary broadcaster Bruce McAveney...possibly the greatest athletics broadcast in history. He's home Michael...magnificent running...looks at the time (he'd run into the 21st century like Bob Beamon)...unbelievable...the best, I've ever seen. I keep watching it just to listen to the broadcast as well as the unbelievable run by Johnson

Michael Johnson was an astonishing athlete, one of the greatest of the 1990's. Roger Black run a very sensible race to get silver. In interviews, Roger always said that he knew he would never been Michael, as his (Roger's) best time was no where near Michael's. So he ran his own race to beat everyone else.
Michael is now a regular commentator at the athletics for the BBC for the Olympics and World Championships and is a great co-presenter with a lot of knowledge and passion.

I was always a huge Michael Johnson Fan! To me he is the more complete runner than Usain Bolt! MJ ran 200 & 400 on worldrecord level at the same time. Bolt never runned really seriously the 400, which is the most demanding distance of all! MJ you are my hero! 🎉❤

Brilliant. Wonderful to watch these races again. Especially the 200 - astounding! If you've not read his autobiography, it's well worth it: "Slaying the Dragon: How to Turn Your Small Steps to Great Feats". That and "I Am Jackie Chan: My Life In Action" are great, inspiring reads.

He couldn't be satisfied being a 200 and 400m legend. He really had to say he was the fastest man like Donovan Bailey didn't win the 100m

Johnson averaged 9.66 seconds per 100m. Meaning his second 100 was blistering, and against numerous top of the field 100m runners of the time.

And the craziest thing about this race is that Frankie Fredericks also broke the old world record. 2 fastest times of all times in the same race. Amazing. And when you think, Pietro Menea's record of 19.72 stood unbroken since 1979 (btw MJ broke that one weeks before the Olympics in Athlanta. Just WOW!
