CLF guy here. Specifically fatsan/foshan hungsing branch. According to my lineage the Fut comes from Fut Gar which if I understand correctly is another name for Hap Gar. Our verstion of the story is that Chan Heung, the style's founder, had a letter of recommendation from one of his masters to go study with a Fut Gar master. He had to stay at his village and couldn't go so he sent one of his best students, a guy by the name Jeong Yim. When the student returned he incorporated what he had learned to the style. Jeong Yim is considered the founder of the Fatsan/Foshan branch of the style.

I've seen some videos of Hap Gar and the connection seemed obvious but hearing it from a master of the style confirms my belief and the version of the style history we learn.
