James Kalm is out on a summer Sunday trying to look at art. The first four galleries he stops by are closed due to their summer schedules. Undaunted (or maybe just dumb) your correspondent forges on. Pausing in front of Steven Harvey Fine Art Project, he is attracted by what he sees, and although the gallery is technically closed, James Kalm smoozes his way in for a brief video tour of “In My House” a series of recent paintings by Susan Lichtman.
Lichtman presents views of her country house, interiors and exteriors that are developed out of simple scenes of daily life, like a figure having coffee on a porch, or a family dinner with guests. Light is uses as a dramatic tool to highlight both narratives and color. Figures and objects are cloaked in a spectrum of richly tinted greys or break into lightened planes of high keyed hue according to their roles in the composition. This program was recorded July 9, 2017.
