paused video at 10 mins and read East Anglian Water 'River Water Quality' report. It is glowing and self-congratulatory and full of striving to do better rhetoric. "94% of the 48 coastal bathing water in our region were rated as Excellent or Good in 2022". Yeah right! When you can manipulate the data in cahoots with the Environmental Agency you are not dealing with scientific data and valid ratings. You are dealing in Bullshit! These liars need to be reigned in HARD and NOW. How about no profits for 10 years until the issues are sorted (and capacity to contain and FULLY treat before discharge seems to be number 1. It is NOT rocket science.)

1st thing, try to get rid of all combined sewer systems. public or private that is the first hurdle. At that point you determine is the treatment system large enough. One way is to look at the treatment inflow and discharge during dry periods. Look at the US with the Cheasapeake Bay Plan. The final year of the plan is 2025, then the trainwreck and finger pointing will commence. Then look at Binghamton NY with the plan they have been running for over a decade now for changing their system from a combined system to sewer and stormwater systems. How, well as they resurface roads, they are installing a stormwater system. This is the responsibility of the municipalities here in the US, even if there are public or private sewer systems now trying to treat it. Then look at the train wreck of Scranton PA where they came to an agreement with the US EPA to change the sewer system from combined to separate systems. Then they sold the sewer system to a private company (PA American Water) while they still have to spend money to separate the stormwater system. One thing I have not seen from the UK is separating the sewage and stormwater as an option, why it puts costs on the municipalities, when you can just point fingers at a private company, even if the finger pointing is warranted.

I met some Dutch guys last year and talked about things like this , including water , health services , railways , roads etc etc , even bridges. They just smiled and asked “…..what is with you guys…..you just don’t seem to able to plan and invest in your infrastructure? You are terrible at it ? “. It didn’t make me feel proud to be English. I’ve come to the conclusion , after some long and hard thinking , that there is a deep , cancerous malaise at the heart of English culture. Instead of planning our future infrastructure out logically we just turn everything into a futile political battle - and then we all suffer. Im convinced that our political voting system makes this much worse than we realise. We rarely get cross party agreements on things because we don’t have Proportional representation. PR is not perfect , but at least it creates coalition Governments and forces parties to work together , and then they can plan long term . For example , in Holland , the health service is not seen as a political football to argue about on Question Time. They see it as beyond party politics and plan accordingly. They also recognise that you get what you pay for. Their health service is vastly superior as a result.

We take so much pride in our gardens and homes. We polish our cars , trim our lawns and put in our new kitchens. Meanwhile , we dump poo in our rivers , have roads full of potholes , trains that run late or not at all , and when we get ill we lie on a bed in a corridor or wait months for an operation. They say an Englishman’s home is his castle , and thats true , but the problem is that this country and its infrastructure is also our home. Why are we not taking pride in it ? Do we not realise we have become a laughing stock to many Europeans ? We used to be so far ahead of the curve in the past. What the hell happened? When did this cancer set in?

I have a great solution, which will put money in governments pocket. just heavily fine the water companies with a fine at least equal to the top boss. which can be 100x that. it seems very simple, and if they can't pay, then could do a take over and make it public again. Any other time it would be called a scam, but all you have to do is follow your own laws, and could get the company back for free.

Frankly am rather shocked that any sewage can be dumped into the sea or rivers .
Why is it not treated ?
I live on the coast of South Africa , we have a large stream that flows into the sea .
If there are issues at the treatment works , we have issues .
hence its local name 'the Turdy' .
We have world waveski champs this week .
Locals are involved with getting ' Blue Flag Status .
400 miles up the coast , a chemical factory caught fire , dumped huge amount of toxins into the local river that feeds into the sea .
the company got a big fine and paid for a clean up !
just bizarre to see this in the UK !

But while the UK and french are already the new ghetto's of Europe, what do you expect?

In Switzerland in many regards more capitalist than the US and more liberal than the UK, ALL waste water treatment is in the hands of the municipalities. There are NO private companies involved in the business of keeping Switzerland's rivers and lakes pristine and the drinking water clean. Why is this? Because the Swiss are still able to see when there is only one viable solution to a problem and will apply that solution.

The onus is also on us to stop this pollution getting into rivers. Those sanitary towels and wet wipes would never have got into pipes in the first place if people disposed of them properly or (even better) used re-usable or biodegradable products.

Personally I find it genuinely disgusting that the most basic thing for actually surviving is locked behind a payment scheme but tbh it's not surprising in world that's custom to literally charging the families of dead people to the brink of ruin because how dare anyone die naturally or otherwise that's a couple grand you owe just wait till the day oxygen levels drop you can then officially enjoy buying taxed canned air

Every pound gone into those employees pockets needs to be seized for negligence and corruption; £250 million for pollution and disease spreading is not what they're paid for.
Seize the funds from these chinless conmen, and do not let the bosses disappear it into assets and other countries.
They're only doing this to climb the ladder, drag them off it.
