(21 May 1988) QUOTE REF INDIA; The remaining 46 Sikh militants barricaded inside the
GS23058808 Golden Temple of Amritsar give themselves up after fierce
23.5.88 fighting between Indian security forces, including the
British SAS-trained "Black Cat" commandos and the Sikh
separatists. 33 militants died in fighting over the 10 day
siege which the Sikhs had prepared for months, smuggling in a
huge arms and supplies cache. Two of the hardline Sikhs
committed suicide by swallowing cyanide. Across the state of
Punjab, which the Sikh seperatists want to transform into an
independent state called Khalistan, revenge killings by Sikh
terrorists claimed a total of 135 victims before Indian
security forces fanned out across the state and the siege
ended bringing an uncertain calm to Amritsar and the Punjab.
