Having one dedicated track for each direction of traffic is a great achievement for the ease of train running and railroad safety, as it significantly lowers the risk of head-on-collissions. But sometimes it makes sense to use the track dedicated for the opposite direction for trains running "against the current of traffic". Here are the rules for it as far as German operation rules (on main railways) are concerned.
Full passenger run on a minute BR 112.1 formation in Dovetail Games' cozy Ruhr-Sieg Nord DLC as well as a partial freight run on a BR 185.5 Traxx 2 locomotive in the venerable Rhein-Ruhr Osten DLC, featuring short tutorials about the German operation rules for using the opposite track, be it in a permanently installed fashion (ständig eingerichteter Gleiswechselbetrieb, 34:13), a temporarily installed fashion (vorübergehend eingerichteter Gleiswechselbetrieb, 1:07:56), by virtue of a wrong-track replacement signal (Gegengleisfahrt-Ersatzsignal, 57:20) or by virtue of dispatcher's orders (48:22).
Also discussed is the braking system on the BR 185.5 Traxx 2 loco (1:23:35).
