How to get started in glamping?
Hey, I’m Tim from Quality Unearthed, and a question we often get asked is how to get started in glamping?

So, perhaps you've got land and are looking to diversify, or perhaps looking to buy land for a change of lifestyle. Glamping is certainly an interesting option and as a growing market, they are good opportunities but there is also pitfalls as well and we don’t want to fall into it. So, I want to give you a quick whistlestop tour of the things you need to think about.

For more information, check the link below or get in touch, but let's get started so, in no particular order, first thing you've got to think about is the location and the land. Now, are you in an existing tourism location? If so, there's already pre-existing demand, that's going to make life easier. If not, what are you going to do to make your site a destination in its own right? There are definitely things you can do around that, which we will advise you on, but think along the lines of quirky quality. There's a real advantage to being out, being bold, inspired, with the structure that you choose. Now the structure that you choose of course is going to be dependent on what you want to achieve at the end of the day. Are you hoping to have a group site? Like to have families that can get together and you want to put up communal spaces, or are you looking to down the more private, potentially more quality route, and that will lead you down certain structure types? Again, the type of structure they can choose be that a treehouse, a helicopter, an earth shelter at home, a cantilever cabin over a quarry or any manner of canvas structures it's ultimately what inspires you.

But having said that there's also the budget element, so you need to make sure you've got the budget lined up, and you've got a good sense of what you've got to spend because, there are many things when your setting up glamping that are unexpected costs, so I'll delve further in to those momentarily.

We've got the location we've got the idea of what we want to do, so of course, we have to get planning permission, this is a really big topic. I’m not a planning expert, so I suggest you see a consultant on that, but in a nutshell, it's highly likely you're going to need planning permission if you've got people sleeping in a structure.

Ok, so now we've got planning out of the way, and were good to get started, got to make sure you think about little things like, where are people going to park? How are they going to get to the structure? Do you need to put in pathways? Are they going to be lit at night? What happens if they arrive in the dark, in the wild wet rain in winter?
Meeting and greeting the guests is quite a sociable phenomena, if you don't like speaking to people maybe glamping isn't the one for you or find someone who's much more socially minded in that sense.

Then you need to think about other features of the property. So, are you going to take dogs? Are you going to have wifi? Are you going to put a fire in? Are you going to welcome pets?

Now some of those things can contribute to your bookings at the end of the day, but some of them are not appropriate. Perhaps you've got livestock then pets option might not be right for you. f you can facilitate it's only going to help.

So we are looking at the land, what kind of structure, what kind of budget you've got, looking at the little details and there's really a lot around it, and if your doing financial planning do feel free to speak to us about some options on that side of things, and what's going to be in the structure but at the end of the day my biggest advice would be to create something quirky, quality something that inspires you, and that will inspire others.
