Fantastic to be able to see an excellent presentation on history that is rarely talked about in Western school.. Just one point of contention it is actually the elimination of the Theme system that led to the decline of the Eastern Empire, under the theme system it was actually cheaper to raise an army then the system the Komnenian introduced.

This time period is more complicated politically than any Game of Thrones.
Unfortunately audiences in USA prefer fiction instead of real history.
I think this is the case because in general US audiences are self centered amd have little to no knowledge of what happened in Western Europe, let alone Central and Eastern Europe.

This is sad because their interests dictate popular media.
Just imagine a 30 seasons (YES) series concentrated on Europe and Middle East since the Roman empire to WW1! I'm talking about covering every major region on the continent for the specific time with parallel stories interwoven. It would be the greatest series ever.

I think it's not possible cinematically, people will be hard to invest in constantly changing main characters, but it's a nice thing to dream about.

As a romanian I dont understand why so many bulgarians are "ashamed" of the posibility of the 2 brothers to have been vlachs.
I am pretty sure we were all getae/thracian brothers at a certain point in time.
I regard bulgarians as lost brothers tbh and I always felt more at home alongside them than for example serbs or turks.

WOW!!! What a great video! I loved that it was not only built on facts but also carefully wovening it with the drama around, making the flow of the video very enjoyable! From: External to internal events, from treason to treason, and culminating*SPOILER ALERT* in an assassination! I had to listen it again 👂 hiding the video 🫣 (so I didn't get distracted with the amazing animations) to enjoy the plot. Finally I liked a lot the "humour" behind scenes, with phrases like: "the didn't think of anything better but to take him hostage" and the slap🖐️ was a great addition hehehe😅.
Big congratulations to the team, for working very coordinated following the script and doing a great edition, and specially to the writer and researcher Georgi Kolev @georgekolev9832

In the end every Balkan empire and kingdom got rekt, because of greed, pride etc.
Centuries later the same applied on the 19th century and still applies today.
Christian rulers/societies not living by Christian morals =degeneration.

I always thought that it was due to bad leadership of the Angelo's that Byzantine empire lost but Isaac was not that incompetent just he had too much odds facing him and his son never had much power to do anything. Alexios Angelo's was fucking incompetent tho and if it weren't for him perhaps the Romans could have survived to this day.

To the appropriators north of the Danube that lacked medieval statehood:
1. Not a single ruler of the Second Bulgarian Empire, ever, referred to himself as Vlach or a champion of an imaginary Vlach cause - not a single one
2. Kalojan the Romanslayer, the most glorious ruler of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the Asen dynasty, declared himself a successor of the Emperors of the First Bulgarian Empire
3. The official language of the Second Bulgarian Empire was Old Church Slavonic, and the alphabet - Cyrillic - both celebrated in Bulgaria, and banned in Wallachia in 1830's
4. There are thousands of Bulgarians named Asen after the founder of the Asen dynasty which leads to the question: why isn't there a single Romanian named Asen if the Asen dynasty were Vlach
5. Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire - if it were a Vlach toponym, how does it translate in Romanian
6. The glory of the Second Bulgarian Empire belongs to Bulgaria exclusively. If you need to disover yourselves retrospectively, go steal someone else's medieval identity and heritage, because ours are not for sale

Let’s not forget the fact that they proclaimed Asen as their family name. Asen/Esen is the royal Turkic Ashina tribe that was also the founding dynasty of the Göktürk Khaganate and many other Turkic states. In medieval times everyone knew the Ashina dynasty especially Cumans and Bulgars which were Turkic people. You could not just come and claim that you are from the Ashina dynasty. People were not that dumb back in the past. Everyone knew his own family line and the family line of other people. It would be the same as if you would claim being from the Bourbon dynasty and claim yourself the king of France. How would poeple react to that? Right, they would laugh at you. The Asen dynasty was of royal Turkic origin.

Quite sad to see how vlachs are usually ignored when it comes to the second bulgarian empire, when not only the brothers were vlachs, but the vlachs were also not a negligible part of the army. The pope called Kalloyan ( iirc ) REX OF BULGARIANS AND VLACHS. To say vlachs were simply a population under bulgarians is also probably false, as we have earlier written proof of vlachs killing Simeon's brother David in battle.

The Empire was actually a Valachian Empire. The Asen dynasty, the majority of the population and aristocracy were valachian according to the chroniclers of the time. Also the dynasties of the empire were Vlachs and Tatars.
