I'm going to make some statements that might be unpopular here, so brace for it.

The story America once told to itself about itself shattered in 2001. Not with the fall of the Towers - the common narrative could have survived that - but with the passage of the US Patriot Act.

Before that we told ourselves that we weren't scared of anything, that our freedoms and principles were scared and we wouldn't compromise them for anything. Not even for loss, not even to protect ourselves. We said we were a country that valued freedom and courage even if there was a price tag in blood to be had with that.

It had never been true but it was what we wanted to believe about ourselves.

Then we compromised. Publicaly. Not just publicaly, but openly, with everyone who suggested it might not be the best idea in the world being shouted down. We gave up some of our freedom for a nascent feeling of security. Not only did this tell certain bad actors that with the right manufactered fears we would absolutely be willing to do this again, not only did it prime the public for certain kinds of compromise going forward, but it marked the birth of a generation who never knew the other America - the one that existed before we became a nation of surveillence and blanket revenge.

After all, the surveillence, the loss of freedoms, was largely targetted at people we were being told to hate, so why should it bother the average citizen who just wanted to feel safe again?

We normalized trading freedom for a false sense safety and the opiod of hate.

And here we are.

Trump is the one who convinced me that, if the Anti-Christ asked us to tattoo 666 on our foreheads, Evangelicals would do it. Even knowing it was the Mark of the Beast, if Trump were the Beast, they'd do it.

Know what.....trump is alot like cancer. A cure will never be found. This society is making too much money from the disease.

We really need these conversations. I heard Chuck Todd say this week on a Boston public radio station that legacy media has already folded to Trump. Legacy media is telling reporters to stop asking the tough questions to keep their access. So very disturbing.
