Ancient Phoenician capital and island from where ships set sail to found Carthage and Cadiz, Tyre was conquered by Alexander the Great when causeway was built to transport troops. What remains today is mostly from Roman and Byzantine era, including Roman Empire's largest hippodrome. Today, the city's proximity to Israel makes it a hot spot for Hezbollah defenders of this otherwise sleepy fishing port.
