Donkey Kong 64 was released in 1999 to universal acclaim.
Critics loved the game, it introduced a whole new generation of gamers to the Donkey Kong brand and it ended up becoming one of the best selling N64 games of all time.
Donkey Kong 64, simply was a tremendous success.

And then Nintendo, did everything in their power to make sure that we all forget about the game again!

They never again did anything major with the newly added kongs - like lanky, or tiny.
They never again used the game's antagonist, K. Rool, even though he was the main antagonist of DK up until then.
They never used the kremlings again, they never again gave Donkey Kong a coconut blaster but … strangest of all … they never released Donkey Kong 64 on the Nintendo 64 online platform.

They are currently in the middle of a marketing campaign for Donkey Kong Bananza and still they do not release Donkey Kong 64 on the Switch’s online service.

Just think about this for a second.
They obviously do not want modern audiences to come in contact with the game.

Which raises the question, why?
Why does Nintendo not like DK64?
What is wrong with the game that makes Nintendo wish we all would forget about it?
Why is Nintendo trying to move the entire DK brand into a new direction, away from its N64 era roots.
Why does Nintendo not want modern audiences to play the game on their online service?
Why is Nintendo afraid of DK64?
What is wrong with DK64?

And I believe the answer to this question is that Nintendo is ashamed of the game.
They are ashamed of a game that sold millions of copies, that critics loved and that still has a cult following to this day.
So why would they ever be ashamed of such a tremendous success?
Well, I’m glad you’re asking, because this very question is what this video is about.
