Can the Toyota LC250 be considered a Land Cruiser?
To me, a Land Cruiser has always been the very best it offers for quality, ruggedness and reliability from Toyota.
From the legendary FJ40 and through out its line.
However recently the waters have become cloudy... here's why:
Ever since the 40 series, 55 series, 60 series and 70 series, it was always under the Toyota brand and aptly named "Land Cruiser".
After great success with the 80 series, rhe Lexus brand was out and they wanted to join rhe dominance with a Luxury version of the Land Cruiser. And im 1996 the LX450 was born. Ever since there was always a LX counterpart to the Land Cruiser as follows:
80 series = LX450
100 series = LX470
200 series = LX570
300 series = LX600
and same goes for 4Runners and GX models:
4Runner 4th gen = GX470 = Prado
4Runner 5th gen = GX460 = Prado
4Runner 6th gen = ???
This is where things get wonky..
The GX being a step doen from the LX and Land Cruiser, is now the same as the LC250? but not the same level as a LX600 or 300 series.
GX 550 = LC250 = Prado
So if Toyota can throw a badge on a GX 550 and csll it a Land Cruiser, then why can't Lexus throw a LX badge on it and call it a LX550?
Well simple... It's not a flagship LX model, its 1 step down. And the 250 is not a 300, its also one step down and shouldnt carry the name.
Ultimately Toyota did a disservice to past Land Cruiser owners by watering down the name by putting a Land Cruiser nameplate on it.
They should have called it what it is...
A Prado.
