Tip for the savvy points travellers.

We leave from Madrid to to Male (Maldives) on the 27th Feb 2025 and we have 19 days on 5 different islands. We are travelling with Qatar airways and using Avios points also known as a reward flight. We always book a separate return flight and below will explain why. Our points getting to Male via Doha was 130,000 for 2 people plus small taxes of around $300.00 USD. Our flight home from Male was double the points 260,000, and taxes were around $1,200.00 USD.   Maldives is considered as the Middle East region and any reward flight from this region is simply not worth it.  (In the interests of being transparent 130,000 / 260,000 for business class, economy you would pay around 65,000 points for 2 people with taxes one way)

Traveller tip - If you travel to Colombo from MALE (we used Emirates - we paid $350 USD for 2 people), and select your trip back home as a separate booking, you will get your reward flight home cheaper, we actually got our return flight for 130,000 Avios and $300.00 USD in tax for 2 people as Sri Lanka is not considered as being in the ME. So there is a savvy way of getting back cheaper with an additional flight.


That said, it would be a shame not to explore this beautiful destination, so we have extended our trip by 10 days to explore a small portion of Sri Lanka in with a commitment to return for longer.

Good idea about the tuk you don't get caught to street hawks. Much cheaper cost and choice wise have your own freedom

We was 7 weeks in Sri Lanka in hikkaduwa and Galle. Very nice Country and nice people. But we pay 100 dollar for a visa and another 100 for Extension pro Person. But it is worth for a nice beatyfull country

Hi! What a lovely and informative video! As a Sri Lankan, I'll be sharing this w my friends who plan to visit firm abroad! A couple of corrections, credit/debit cards are absolutely accepted in many parts of the country (mostly at commercial vendors). Most people in Colombo primarily use a credit card. But there could be some limitations where only local bank cards are accepted due to visa/master fees. Amex is not accepted. Additionally, Sri Lankan drinking water is safe to drink for short periods of time. Most locals boil tap water and cool it before drinking or they use a water filter. It is not dangerous to drink it neither will it cause any stomach issues. However, it is not recommended to drink it directly out of the tap more than a few times. :) Re Colombo, totally agree. As someone born and raised in the city, I entirely love it. But I can understand it's a complex jungle for someone visiting from outside. Highly rec following some local influencers from the city so you know what's good and bad. :)
