Free-motion quilting un-fused random, raw edge applique or quilting has been my passion and business for more than a decade. NO FUSE RAW EDGE APPLIQUE PART 1 INTRO: here we get set up to start stitching next video. I will try to post the next video within a week; the pattern for the cozy will go up on my website later today.
**PIN WARNING: METAL SAFETY PINS AND STRAIGHT PINS ARE USUALLY A POOR CHOICE FOR RAW-EDGE APPLIQUE, because they reduce your speed and flexibility, and riddle your piece with hazards**
Here we begin a short series of videos to practice the techniques and continue building the skills needed for larger projects. Choose to make a bell-shaped tea cozy, a table trivet, or a table mat. You could even make the oven mitt or french press designs covered in my other gift project videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaGo_8Zz-f0YlS1NCl8iLDJmTFBmhqOCA I hope you enjoy this presentation of my favorite technique. I can't tell you how much it has enriched my creative life. Thank you for watching!

0:25 My first "art quilt" was a rose branch that hangs in my home. The stuffed flowers and leaves have all finished edges.
0:43 The Art of Fabric Collage by Rosemary Eichorn is still available and is featured with the author's permission
2:07 What I wanted: *No Fusing *Dimension *Very little marking *Needle drawing *Stability *Evolving designs *Texture *Serendipity
2:34 I wanted to stitch my own shapes: draw and doodle with my needle
2:59 If you like to doodle and draw, raw-edge quilting may open up your creative life in ways you've never hoped for
3:14 Project options: TEA COZY, TABLE TRIVET, TABLE MAT **Please let know if you are making one of these! Your feedback motivates me to work harder on making the videos as good as I can!!** (Another option: you could collage these with printed motifs like in the book using the basic techniques we will cover next video.)
4:23 Measuring the tea pots for the cozy: my biggest dimensions are 22 x 9.5"; the pattern on my website is a generous fit in at least one direction for these three pots: http://zazusstitchart.com/zazustutorials.html
4:31 General quilt sandwich plan - BASTE THIS: 5 basting strategies from an earlier video (but don't pin this project): https://youtu.be/5hNkce45B4k?t=273
1) Top layer that you will applique
2) Batting layer(s)
3) Backing fabric - use for color cues
5:34 TEA COZY LAYERS - BASTE 4 Front; BASTE 4 Back: 5 basting strategies from an earlier video (but don't pin this project): https://youtu.be/5hNkce45B4k?t=273
1) Top fabric
2) 1 each cotton & insulbright batting
3) Backing fabric - making the backing larger is helpful but wasteful
6:10 5 TABLE TRIVET LAYERS - Mine starts at 11 x 11 inches - BASTE THIS: 5 basting strategies from an earlier video (but don't pin this project): https://youtu.be/5hNkce45B4k?t=273
1) Top fabric
2) Three layers insulbright batting
3) Backing fabric - making the backing larger is helpful but wasteful
6:30 3 TABLE MAT LAYERS - Roughly cut a 16-inch circle. BASTE THIS: 5 basting strategies from an earlier video (but don't pin this project): https://youtu.be/5hNkce45B4k?t=273
1) Top fabric
2) 1 layer cotton batting
3) Backing fabric - making the backing larger is helpful but wasteful
7:07 Gather about a dozen nice scraps of fabric, taking color cues from your backing fabric. Go contrasty, tone on tone, or crazy colorful - you can add or subtract later. It is supposed to be fun! I will publish the next video as soon as I figure out the best way to present the techniques.
