While home movies could technically could be considered an indie film (although I really wouldn't recommend submitting the footage to a festival), it is so much more than that. Indie filmmaking, also known as independent filmmaking, refers to the process of creating films outside of the traditional studio system. Independent filmmakers often have more creative control over their projects and can explore unconventional or niche subject matter, artistic styles, and storytelling techniques. Most indie films are passion projects and are about the experience and actual act of collaborating with others, as opposed to soulless large-scale movies. While the exact funding and distribution methods vary from country to country, the basic things required to shoot an independent film are universal (i.e, a camera, actors, etc.).
Story Time: A cashier once asked me about a t-shirt that I was wearing. The shirt was advertising an upcoming film event I was working on, so I told the cashier about it. They replied, "Indie film? Like... Home movies?" I died on the inside and have never fully recovered from that comment.
