It was used, you needed both to play final fantasy 11 online, which SE around 2011 or 2013 I think ended support for the PS2 and now only on pc.

FreeMcboot... Man I remember having to get a copy of metal gear solid snake eater. Make a copy of it but change out one elf file on the disk and burn it to DVD and hot swap the discs just to get Mcboot to install to the memory card

You can make this even better by installing Freehdboot on the hard drive and then you have a modded ps2 able to play your "backups" and not need to worry about keeping that freemcboot card in at all times.
