It’s a moot point because there are Walmarts essentially in the city there is one in Queens right near the airport, another in Newark ect. There are plenty just outside the city. You’d be hard pressed to find a Walmart in the downtown part of any city. There isn’t enough land for adequate parking in most downtown areas.

I've seen Walmart destroy main-street USA over the years. You may think it's great because it's cheap, but it has been part of the fall of the middle class, especially in semi-rural areas. Walmart sets up on cheap land just outside of town and the small shops died. Not letting them in may save some businesses in NY, but it may be too late to care. Amazon is finishing most of them off anyway.

Of course Walmart should have a store in new York if they want to, Politics should have nothing to do with it, that would be corrupt.

In the year 2000 NYC had 8 million people and 40,000 police. Today NYC has 8 million and 36,000 police. The 4000 LESS police is almost the # that NYC COULD HAVE HIRED with the money spent in prosecuting Donald Trump for fake/EXPIRED charges that will ultimately lose. New York City should sue every developer in the same manner that they did Trump. Think that might help?..NO. NYC tried to affect our elections, now they can live in their ''burning'' house.

Every small business in NYC had to pay "cash tips" to cops and bureaucrats and donate to Democrats in order to open and stay in business.
It is much harder to extort national chains.
Boston had a virtual ban on Walmart, too.

Good, New York City is smart to keep that glorified junk store out. Wal Mart moves into a community and undercuts all other businesses and when the competitors are gone, Wal Mart suddenly decides to close up shop and move elsewhere. Even top performing locations are closed. Wal Mart is overrated and is bad for the USA in the long term. The quality of their products is garbage. I will never set foot into a Wal Mart. People need to look at the bigger picture and not just prices.

How much does a Walmart worker earn per hour ? Do they screw their suppliers too ? I suspect the answers are a lightbulb moment. You're ALL getting screwed. Why is a living wage a problem ? I know getting one is a problem, all over the US. And they say slavery was ended........

When Walmart comes into a town or city they lose money by underselling all the local stores then after the mom and pop stores leaves Walmart raises its prices. Walmart destroys cities and towns. They also not only underpay employees but also treat them horribly.

But Walmart actually is in New York City. You just don't realize it. Walmart owns Aldi. Walmart also owns a large chunk of McClane the largest distributor of goods to convince stores in the country. I laughed my butt off one day when I saw a K Mart manager in Walmart doing price comparisons and noticed that everything he was looking at was a McClane item. He couldn't understand why his cost for the item was just pennies under Walmart retail. I then informed him that if he wanted to compete with Walmart prices that it might be a good idea to buy the product from someone other than Walmart. K Mart spent years trying to undersell Walmart on the very items they were BUYING FROM WALMART. It's no wonder that K Mart went bankrupt. You can't buy a product from a company and then sell it for less than the company sells it if you want to stay in business. K Mart lost billions of dollars trying to undercut the prices of the very company that they bought the products from.

I used to live in a small community in Los Angeles County, this community has had for decades giant empty lots in it. Target tried to move in, the community rallied and blocked it. Home Depot tried to move in. The community rallied and blocked it. Last I heard they are still blocking anyone from moving in, I haven't kept strict track because I moved out. The two lots are both too big for any small business to buy them. The crime and blight in the area is getting worse and worse every year. You couldn't beg me to move into that area now. But hey, congrats on them blocking any stores that could service their community. I guess.

They drive prices to the bottom to destroy competitors, creating a potential monopoly situation also driving prices so low they drive some suppliers out of business they occasionally buy them out

Walmart was banned from NYC many years ago due to the size of the store and they would crush many other stores. All you need is 1 Walmart in rural areas. There was also some objection to Home Depot at first but they were able to open a store smaller than their usual size stores.

The political reasons why Wal-Mart isn't in NYC just feels silly and don't make a lot of sense to me. I went to the city for the first time last summer, coming from North Carolina, and I was blown away at how sky high the prices were for basic things, compared to what they are in NC. I think that people in NYC with such a high cost of living could probably benefit from a large retailer like Wal-Mart who can bring cheaper necessities to them. I know Wal-Mart isn't the most ethical store, but what large chain is? Like you mentioned, there are so many other chains in the city that also have a bad track record, but nobody seems to care. To me, it feels like Wal-Mart is targeted because there's a perception that Wal-Mart is for poor people. Classism really is what it boils down to. Wal-Mart is seen as being too "low brow", while stores like Target are seen as nicer, so they get to stay. It's so ridiculous, imo, and this attitude just hurts the people living there more than it helps them.

Having worked there, believe me you're better off without them. They by far are the most disorganized employer I've worked with, and I'm in mid-60's, with a few jobs under my belt. And you can get prices, if not lower shopping at other places - they do not hold the market on that note. Do some price comparisons and you'd be surprised the $ saved.
The company is pure greed, with care only for $$$ (the founder would be disgusted with how his family now operates). The shutdowns of many stores labeled 'under-performing' show this, leaving thousands unemployed (in many cases in poor areas where it aided the locals). Some of these shutdowns happened so quickly overnight with no warning whatsoever, that employees went to work the following morning to be met with locked doors, and a sign "store closed".
Is that how you run a business.
Do not shop there. They don't give a hoot for anyone but themselves... not the employees, not the shoppers, no one. It's a awful place to work and I definitely will never give them a penny if I can help it!

Walmart prices are not necessarily lower than other big box stores prices for name brand items. Marketing and misconceptions make New Yorkers believe they are missing out by not having a Walmart nearby.

Walmart gets over 40% inventory from China. Americans really shouldn't shop at these businesses that mainly deal with China. Walmart claimed they were going to reduce their dependency on Chinese products, but it only went down about 3-5%.
