I was ok with the upgraded X-wings and A-wings, since that kind of makes sense based off of real world military aircraft. If the B-wings were OG B-wings, that would be a callback to how the Rebels used Clone Wars era Y-wings due to them being available. However, the First Order still using TIE Fighters doesn't make sense. By Return of the Jedi, TIE Interceptors were becoming more common, and in Legends there were several newer TIE variants that are introduced. The only reason TIE Fighters were still used was for the same reason the Rebels used Y-wings, they were cheap and available. The First Order, as supposedly and up teched and elite faction from the Empire, should be using some later model TIE variants, not a better version of the TIE Fighter. Like many things in the Sequel Trilogy, the ship designs were poorly thought out and disappointing. That's the real reason the ships are just "What we had before, but better" because of a lack of new ideas, or a lack of faith in new ideas, in universe lamp shading aside.

Fanbase: Man i can't wait to see how the New Republic has evolved and what cool new ships the good guys have.
JJ Abrams: The Resistance is an alliance of, uh, rebels. So, anyway, we show Poe Dameron flying an X- Wing, but it's painted black...

Missed the opportunity to add in the E-Wing and the K-wing to the movies, which were the actual ships that were going to replace the X-wing and Y-wing. Or at least add them is as prototypes if the era for them wasn't quite there yet.

I will say that, from an engineering perspective, the engine changes on the X-Wing make no sense. Turbine engines spin, that’s how they work. You can’t do that with a semicircle.

While I dislike the sequels, the concept of it being Rebels 2.0 vs Empire 2.0 is... interesting. I have a love-hate relationship with it. On one hand, in universe it means that this tech was good enough to make new models, but out of universe it's like they don't care to make new stuff.

The X-Wing is really one of the only ones to make sense militarily: Much like the M1-Abrams is still used as a base platform with updated technology for the funny bits, so is the X-Wing. The A-wing is just a good interceptor, but so are TIE Interceptors. The Y-Wing thing is just bull.

I got why the rebel alliance used old clone wars era and scrappy ships. They were unorganized and needed whatever they could get their hands on. The resistance is a faction that theoretically should have the funds to produce new ships. It's the perfect excuse for Disney to get creative 😔

He makes a good point actually that a significant portion of the Starfighters seen in the streaming shows are "Local defence" and not "federated Navy ones". But if I had to guess what the New Republic was using i'd say some T-85 X-wings (or some other similar newer model than the resistance has access too in any significant numbers) as they'd be useful as heck due to not requiring a Carrier to do "everything" and since we have them on screen now some E-wings as well.

That isn't however what I think they SHOULD be using, more what I think they would be using from Disney Star Wars' POV not the POV of a fictional government themselves that would be an entirely different set of requirements as one requires "what is saleable" and the other what is useful to perform the mission tasks.

The New Republic isn't a serious government though.. in terms of Fictional Governments they are about as much use as the regime of President Clarke in Babylon 5. So unless a future videogame or other outsourced media does Disney Lucasfilm's job for them and fixes that mess, I think it will remain a plot device of a purposefully functionally useless government for plot reasons alone.

It is fun to speculate though.. I love the idea of there being "sexed up" Arc 170's too.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and to be fair, most of the designs are noticeably different enough to be recognisable as their own, the "new" X-Wing and Y-Wing look pretty good TBH. The "new" A-Wing however is, excuse moi Francais, a fucking abomination and should promptly be thrown into a volcano by a Mishima.

This might sound strange, but they should have been using old TIE fighters. This would solve a few issues and be a neat juxtaposition.
After the war and large demobilization or the New Republic simply having old stocks of Imperial equipment TIEs should be abundant. The NR was not focused on a strong central military and encouraged local defense forces. TIEs don’t have hyperdrives so they can’t leave the planetary system, thus making them perfect for local defense forces for use against pirates or whatever legal justification they’d have under New Republic law to have a military. And if the government is concerned about rouge factions taking control of other systems they could legally restrict access to carriers and larger ships, to whatever effectiveness.
IF the NR was smart they would have kept these carriers in reserve in case of a mass war situation, so they could assemble local defense force TIE fleets into federalized combat units based on the carrier fleets, delegating them to the New Republic fleet as needed.
Also think about all the men with years of experience working in the Imperial military who could contribute and be employed, no longer needing to be sympathetic to the imperial remnant or coming first order (assuming mass pardons for low ranking non political people)
After the NR fleet is destroyed in the Force Awakens the bulk of the Resistance should have been the TIE planetary fleets. You can even keep the upgraded Rebel ships and hold back the TIE swarms just as they did the mass fleet at Exegal, explaining it away as they couldn’t find transportation for their fighters and were fighting time before the First Order got to them first, makes the whole sequel trilogy a little easier to swallow, gives it a unique spin (imperial vs newer imperial tech), and I came up with it in 15 minutes on my porch. So yeah

Outstanding video! It's a fun format, actually seeing the research. I am a Star Wars vehicle nut. Have been ever since I saw Ep. 4 at the drive-in when I was a kid. I have the Complete Vehicles guide, and I think its a neat read, especially the illustrations & cross-sections. The real waste of money there, in my humble opinion, is the Rise of Skywalker guide. I understand & appreciate the value of reference material, but between the 2, the vehicles guide is FAR more necessary than a book about the sequels! 😆
Love your channel man! Thanx for all the work you put in, it's well worth it! You've got a good thing going here, keep it up!

Old equipment going to various other factions is pretty standard stuff.

I actually wouldn't put it past various appropriations bills to have a pretty standard pipeline of stuff to the Resistance, even if it's not TECHNICALLY above the board.

Particularly when we see the arms dealers with the rich people in The Last Jedi. A nice little war to keep production lines moving and the coffers filled.

Criticism of the sequel trilogy has often times been framed far too much around the culture war anti-woke nonsense that seems to have infected every fandom these days.

Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, they might have ended up as lacklustre characters but the race and gender of the actors has nothing to do with it. All of those actors could have done a good job and made their roles iconic with better material. With a better story.

The core of the problem for me was always a lack of creativity and confidence handling a continuation of the Star Wars universe. The fact that Episode 7 reset the status quo back to essentially rebels vs empire with x-wings and tie fighters and another fallen Jedi Order was just disappointing and unoriginal. It felt like our heroes had done all that fighting and 30 years later everything got reversed.

The story then went on to give no interesting or compelling answers to the new developments that were set up as important. Who is Snoke? Doesn't matter. Who is Rey? Nobody, or no she's a Palpatine. Why did Luke disappear? He had a vision of his nephew turning evil for some reason...

The lack on creativity in the sequel ships was just one example of the many annoyances that made the trilogy so frustratingly unimaginative overall.

A bit of headcanon here. When you look at the T-65 it has 4 of these stabilizers maybe contributing towards its ease of use for new pilots. The T-70 seems to keep this same ideology until they separate, I like to think this makes the ship unstable and therefore increases maneuverability just like the real world F-16.

Those ships becoming popular and everyone starts buying them makes sense. But I'd have also liked to have seen new ships made by competitors to ape the success of these.

I don't understand why the FO are using Ties when they effectively failed. They should basically be also using X-Wings and the like, but their own imperial versions of them.
