At 32.53 he mentions cruisers being sunk by torpedo armed avengers. Taffey 3 had no torpedo armed avengers, all of its aircraft were armed for anti-submarine and ground support, so they went with what they had. The torpedo's came from the tincans. Some of the aircraft in Taffy 2 switched their avengers to torpedo's but they did not get into the fight till late in the engagement.

The Naval battle of Okinawa was the deadliest sea battle in US Naval history with no IJN surface vessels factoring in the 4,907 US Naval personnel KIA by way of the Kamikazes that did get through to hit their targets. The Navy lost more personnel at Okinawa than any other branch of service.
