Knitting Tips for Beginners from the Fabulous Nancy Queen

Hi Margaret. Thanks for this vid. I'm the same, at my age, I choose so much pink or purple yarns, I do feel much younger in those colours, like riding a bike at my age, I really go back, everything releases and I am young again. I've been knitting for a long time but I am still an advanced beginner. I don't try anything too hard because I get distracted with life and I lose track in the pattern. I am a big fan of hats and I am to the point where I can modify patterns. You can do it too, as it's so simple. My hats convert to tea cozies so they are great gifts, they can be either a hat or a tea or coffee cozy! They have a new knit store a few blocks away and I just become bright on the inside when I see all the colours and types of wool, very textile which I love. Maybe it harks back to where we've been as women, when we made our own clothes and all the clothes for our families, well, I am Ukrainian and German after all. I feel like a true artist who remains undiscovered, even by myself, but knitting offsets the rest of my life and inspires me. When I watch tv for example, the news, I also knit, and it makes me feel like I am accomplishing something wonderful at the same time. I also knit a simple shawl and it reminds me of how women always wore shawls, at the turn of the century and earlier, not sweaters as they do now, but shawls over dresses and my shawl, I call it my triangle, I cover my shoulders with it at night when I wake up and read, (as I can't sleep through the nigh anymore), and it is just so comforting and it brings me joy when I touch it and know I made it. You do develop your skill, your taste and technique evolves over time, keep at it. As you learn to read the patterns, and as you have experience with reading the stitches you've worked, you can then take stitches out and even start over again and again, to get it right. Felting is also a fun way to be an artist and work with textiles. I've had so many ideas on making things, (I think for a living), which is inspiring. I usually make things for myself, as everyone does NOT appreciate home made gifts anymore as much as they should, so recipients of my knits, are only those who I know appreciate how much work is invested and how much love. Like a hat is 8 hours! I get paid quite a bit at work per day, but I find not everyone appreciates them as they would if they bot that perfect hat at a store. Knit hats in stores are so flat, as they are pressed and they look so cookie cutter.
