so the critical server is only in the US, 4 of the guys are from the same group(nato), 3 are from colonies with US armies stationed in them, and only 1 that isnt easily dealt with.

The childish "humour" throughout this video is so infuriating. It strikes me as someone trying to hard to make people laugh and seem cool. Sometimes, occasional quirky lines can add to a video. But you overdo it. Otherwise, an interesting watch thanks.

if anybody is wondering what HSMs are being used in ICANN, its Thales Luna G5 and Luna SA GP HSMs. But probably they might want to migrate to a different, OEM like Futurex for more advanced and next gen GP HSMs

Based on ICANN’s own explanation on their website, it seems this video confused two types of keyholders (who are actually called Trusted Community Representatives). The group of seven people mentioned in the video are “Recovery Key Share Holders”, who actually don’t attend key ceremonies. They hold smart cards, instead of physical keys, and those smart cards are used to decrypt a backup of the Root Zone Key Signing Key (the digital private key mentioned in the video) to reboot the Internet only when there’s some kind of catastrophe. They otherwise don’t do anything. The other kind of keyholders are Cryptographic Officers, of which there are 14. They hold physical keys, which are used to open physical boxes containing smart cards in ICANN facilities, which are then used to open the hardware security module containing the Root Zone Key Signing Key. This is the process described in the video, and it does not happen in a disaster scenario (like when the key is compromised, as mentioned in the video). Instead, they do this once or twice every year, in regularly scheduled key ceremonies. The goal of this is just to increase trust in the security of Internet, nothing else.

Except of course that wouldn't turn off the internet, only DNS resolution. The servers would all still be running and could be accessed by their IP address.

I'm sorry, but I need to be that guy😅 Technically, this doesn't turn off the internet. It just doesn't allow you to use URLs and instead have to use IP addresses. I know this will make everything a lot more difficult and ruin a lot of shortcuts if they routed it to the URL instead of IP address, but the internet is still up and running.

This is the video I use to explain to people what I do for a living.

Two corrections:

A) it's "dns sec" (two words) not " d n s s e c"

B) not all domains are protected by DNSSEC. The adoption rate is somewhere in the single digit percentages.
