Judaea, Herodians. Agrippa I Æ 22, Caesarea Maritima. Dated RY 2 = 37/8 CE. 22 mm. 8.4 gm. Obv: BACIΛEΩC AΓPIΠΠAC, diademed head to right. Rev: AΓPIΠΠA YIOY BACIΛEΩC, Agrippa on horseback to right; L B (date) below. RPC I 4974; Sofaer 147-8; TJC 113. Very Rare.
Agrippa, on the advice of the governor of Syria, dissuaded Caligula from introducing emperor worship at Jerusalem. Later Caligula decided to restore Agrippa to his grandfather’s throne but was assassinated in 41 before he could effect that plan. In the delicate question of the imperial succession, Agrippa supported Claudius, who emerged successful and added Judaea and Samaria to Agrippa’s kingdom.
