WWII’s First Jet Fighter: The M.E. 262

The Messerschmitt Me 262, affectionately known as “Schwalbe” (Swallow), holds the distinction of being the first operational jet-powered fighter in history. Although its design predated WWII, it took to the skies for the first time in 1941 with a piston engine and transitioned to jet power by 1942. Fitted with two Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets and armed with four 30mm cannons, it boasted speeds of around 540 to 560 mph—making it significantly faster than any Allied piston-powered fighter. By mid-1944, the Me 262 was engaged in combat, tearing through Allied bomber formations with alarming speed and firepower. German pilots reported over 500 kills while suffering only 100 losses. However, the aircraft's potential was hampered by persistent Allied bombings, fuel shortages, and Hitler's insistence on using it for bombing missions instead of its intended role. Of the approximately 1,400 units produced, only about 300 actually saw combat. Nevertheless, its innovative swept wings, jet engines, and overall design revolutionized the future of aviation. The jet age had dawned, catching the Allies off guard.
