Studying and memorization have always been part of the learning process. However, in the early 1970s, mechanical engineering students at MIT were introduced to a new method of learning when Professor Woodie Flowers created the first hands-on robotics competition focused class known then as course 270. In this class, students were given "bags of junk," as Woodie called them, consisting of cardboard tubes, rubber bands, sprockets, and a couple of motors. Using these items, students were challenged to design and build a robot to complete a specific task. By going beyond lectures and theories, Woodie Flowers gave his students a chance to put their lessons into action in a collaborative way. Video created by Raphael Liy
