As the Kanwar Yatra, a Hindu pilgrimage attracting over three crore participants annually, ends on 2 August, Article 14 spoke to filmmaker Kunal Vohra whose 2020 film ‘Longen Folk To Go On Pilgrimage,’ examined the socio-economic and environmental aspects of the pilgrimage and its transformation into a showcase for Hindu nationalism. This year’s Kanwar Yatra saw increased violence, including assaults and vandalism, with inadequate responses from authorities reported across north India. With more people participating each year, environmental and health concerns have risen due to the massive waste generated. Worsening pollution levels in the river Ganga highlighted the need for better regulation, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
