Apples and oranges. Titanic hit an iceberg, Gustloff took 3 torpedoes from a Soviet sub (who just happened to sink another German ship 4 days later with a loss of about 4200). While there were innocent’s killed, it was full of German troops and Navy personnel. It had been re-painted from a hospital ship and converted to a military troop ship. This made it a legitimate military target. War sucks…… Maybe if the Captain had not turned on its lights as the Soviet sub was having problems with some of their systems, they might have had a chance.

Officially it was not a war crime.
But the captain of the submarine knew what and who he was attacking.
So for me it was a war crime.
He also later attacked and torpedoed the rescuers during the rescue maneuvers

As for the relative obscurity about the sinking. It was during a war when millions had died. Thousands were dying everyday. For Germany where the defeat was an embarrassment and shame it was something to move on from. For other people's not much pity was to be expected. The Titanic sinking was out of the blue with nothing particular going on at the time along with the weirdness to it that we all know about . All sad all horrible
