Just finished the ‘Ancient History Documentary’ on the Mongols destroying Baghdad, and wow, talk about a bad Yelp review! 'Came for the culture, left with nothing but ashes. Would not recommend.

Marco Polo wrote that supposedly, the Mongols were shocked at the wealth in the Caliph's palace. He could have used all that treasure to save his people, wither through tribute or buying mercenaries, and did not. So, they locked him in his treasury. With no food or water. Let him be with what he valued most for the rest of his life.

badhdad's house of wisdom and library of alexandria were predecessors of london museum, stashing looted wealth, books and manuscripts.

christians and muslim invaders have been destroying such centres of learning in India, Persia, Americas and Israel....they should not feel when their own is destroyed in the very same manner...

The Muslims Arabs got treated the same way they treated other nations. From colonisation/Conquering lands killing innocent people taking their women as səx slavəs and forcing them to convert to Islam and forcing non Muslims to pay jizya. All the things they had done in the past at that time came back to bite them in the a$$. This was God punishment for them.

The House of Wisdom may have been destroyed physically but its legacy lives on
In present day Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, open area book shops and stalls flourish, not even the most evil of thieves would dare to steal a book there, according to tradition

"All good things come to an end"? The "good" Islamic "golden age" was one of barbarism, colonisation, slavery, sacking and burning entire parts of Europe. The crusades should have destroyed Islam completely.

Nalanda University in Bihar, India was destroyed by Muslims in 1200 - The first significant blow came in the 12th century when Bakhtiyar Khilji, a Turkish military general of the Mamluk Dynasty, laid waste to the university. Khilji, leading his forces in 1193 CE, targeted Nalanda as part of his campaign to conquer northern India, according to the 19th century historian Minhaju-s Siraj.
Locals often describe how Khilji's forces set fire to the grand libraries, reducing centuries of accumulated knowledge to ashes. The burning is said to have lasted several months, with the massive collections of manuscripts feeding the flames. Monks and scholars were massacred too.

China declared its surrender to the Mongols so that the ancient manuscripts and palaces of Beijing and Nanjing have survived to this day. Jenghiskhan once did diplomacy and said: "surrender, we will be the protectors of your country, if you refuse we will destroy everything until nothing remains." The Sultan of Baghdad at that time was right. -really arrogant by challenging back. And there was a terrible tragedy that no country had ever experienced during the Mongol conquest. Not only were flattened buildings/manuscripts burned to the ground, but also the ethnic cleansing of millions of heads of genocide were piled as high as a fortress.

It's something to wonder why the Mongols were so anti-settlement. I wonder if it's the revenge of the hunter gatherers on the settlers, who build fences and stop herders from accessing pasture.

Well I doubt if all knowledge books in Baghdad were truely scientific at all. Most probably it was limited to Islamic knowledge, like Flat earth theory.

Muslim invaders actually burnt Nalanda University in current Pakistan in 9th century, that was truely devoid of religious bias and was real scientific university.

The so-called learning of Islam is a joke. All they did was translate some Hindu Sanskrit manuscripts into Arabic when they invaded Sindh and Kashmir, from where this was passed on to Whites in Europe (who thought this knowledge was an original creation of Arabs). Have the Muslims invented anything in the last 1,000 years? Is free thinking and speculation even allowed in Islam which is so necessary to make new inventions and discoveries? All Muslims were bothered with in entire history (and even now) was to invade other lands and capture their women for sex

Why cry about house of wisdom? Muslims just 50 years before the sack of Baghdad invaded Indian and burned the library of Nalanda, the largest university in the World of that time. The library, having more than a million manuscripts carrying all the wisdom of the ancient age, burnt for six months

The Islamic world never recovered from this loss. The reason the entire diaspora seems to prefer an existence that's closely akin to the 13th century, is because that's when the sack of Baghdad happened. This video doesn't give the carnage justice, and the blow to the Islamic world was so severe on every level, that it's STILL a part of their cultural psyche.

No one helped this Caliph because he focused more on this life than the next. He lacked some of the fundamental qualities of a Muslim, which made him more like a munafiq (hypocrite). He was unworthy of his position, and those who allowed and followed him shared in his sin. Although historians call that city 'modern' or 'Golden Age' at that time, it was because the city and the Caliph promoted Western culture more than Islamic values.

In reality, this city was not at the height of the 'Golden Age'; rather, the spirit of innovation continued for centuries afterward.

The Caliphs then allowed the Mongols to carry out the dirty work for them. I personally believe that, they should not have allowed this but instead should have started a conquest against the Mongols. However, reality can often be disappointing.

And, History is written by the Victors.

The betrayal, the acceptance of the Munafiqs and the weak Muslims in positions of power, and the importation of Western culture were the key reasons for the decline of the Muslim world.

As a Muslim i have no hard feelings to Hulagu or Mongols. This is the rule; surrender or war. We Muslims did the same too. Christians did it too. Everybody did. This was how people settled things back in the days. Hulagu was not more or less cruel than his counterparts at that age. Became strong or die, this rule never changed.
