I watched the hell out of the Matrix when it came out and it was one of my favourite movies. So as soon as I heard of Max Payne and its bullet time mechanics, I was of course impressed. I didn't end up playing the game, but I was impressed anyway. XD
I played Worms Armageddon and it looks very much like World Party. And yes, tons of fun. :D
Anachronox seems very interesting. I admit I don't know what defines a JRPG apart from its country of origin. But I appreciate a game with a good story. :)

Max Payne was pretty spectacular in it’s day & gameplay has aged pretty well. There are game mods to modernise the graphics (as much as possible) that work pretty well too.
This is going to sound like sacrilege from someone who played soooooo much Worms 1 with a friend of mine that it wasn’t fun for our friends to play against us but the Worms sequels, all of them, are kind of redundant. They look nicer, you get more weapons etc. but the original gives you just as much multiplayer fun.
AVP 2 has nothing to do with the movies, which is good frankly. The game is so much better than those movies with some original environments & challenges, why no films really came out of the games I will never understand?
You know I can’t remember if I’ve played Blade of Darkness? Sounds like a blast though?
Anachronox is new to me? That’s an interesting description though & I like what you’ve shown, I’ll have to give it a go.
Schizm is a love letter to Myst that is also entirely it’s own thing & I highly recommend it!
You summed up Fallout Tactics perfectly, “it’s not the Fallout game I wanted.” I’m not going to knock it for not being my thing but it’s the only Fallout I haven’t put any real time in to.
Gothic is well worth a play. It owes a lot to Elder Scrolls but is it’s own game but (& I do know this is me being all high-functioning autistic) the way your character handles his sword pisses me off in a big way! He looks like a kid with a toy sword he doesn’t know how to handle. I know, I know but it bugs me OK?! 😄

That’s a great list! You’ve done a good job of showcasing both classics & some great lesser known games, thanks.

Blade of Darkness was probably my favorite out of all these.
I only learned to appreciate Fallout Tactics later when Fallout 3 and 4 felt like they missed that something that the old isometric games had.

I'm one of the few people out there that enjoy playing Tactics more than Fallout

How did you get FOT to run so smoothly?

Blade of Darkness is such a gem of a game, forgotten for so many years but finally getting some recognition again after the steam re-release a few years back. Really wish it had sold better at the time so that we could have gotten more stuff from the devs. As it was this was their only game, but at least it was a memorable one!

Fun fact: Max Payne actually came up with the bullet time before The Matrix did, but the movie came out first.

Max Payne - I love this game, and Max Payne 2. I never played the third one though. You know what bugs me though? Max Payne controls exactly like a first person shooter. You move with the keyboard, aim with the mouse, and Max is always facing the same direction as the camera. Everyone agrees that Max Payne is a classic, and nobody ever complained about the controls. However now, it's been universally decided that all third person games MUST have separate controls for the camera and the character. And instead of just aiming with the mouse, now you have to use a lock-on system. WHY???

Aliens vs. Predator 2 - While I did enjoy this game, it felt even more heavily scripted than the first game. Also, while playing as the predator, I was cloaked, and on high ground in the forest section, but every time I tried to target marines on the ground below me, they instantly knew I was there. It didn't matter how high I was, or how far away they were, they ALWAYS saw me.

Gothic is such a great game, and allowed for freedom to solve quests that was unusual for it's time.
