Gonna show my age here but this is referencing the Pixar short film "Geri's game" from 1997 about an old man who plays chess with himself...that may have unlocked some core memories for you. If that DOESNT ring a bell yet, the old man from that short was re-used as an asset for the guy who repairs woody in Toy Story 2.
