Dont they call them Southrons, not easterlings?
ОтветитьNo movie sucks. Next.
ОтветитьHey Men of the West, longtime fan, but I think this is my first comment; I really loved my birthday present from Warner, despite having my own criticisms about it, such as the Watcher's appearance, or even the portrayal of Wulf (specifically the fact that we don't get to see him actually win a single fight?), but overall I feel like they truly did the story justice, and even adequately put it into the form of a modern story. Truly a spectacular film, and I feel like your review actually touches on stuff that I didn't even notice myself, such as her donning the dress (specifically what it would have entailed past the aesthetic value).
ОтветитьThey had at least 4 mumakil.
Also, Hera killing wulf in the context of frealaf riding in to route wulf’s army still could be justifiably stated as frealaf killing wulf by extension. 🤷🏼♂️
It was a great experience to watch this film. I loved it. There were some moments I thought were different than I’d have done them, some were even a little silly, but what of that can’t be said about the Peter Jackson trilogy?
This was so much fun. Such a good movie.
I need to add some beef, so many people upset by the idea of a female warrior when tolkien himself laid the groundwork for this to even be a thing in the first place. Tolkien based the culture of the rohirrim on the anglo-saxon vikings of old, want to know who ragnar lothbrok was married to? Lagertha, a shieldmaiden warrior who ventured with him into battle, this is real history.
ОтветитьPeople complaining about Hera being a competent fighter (competent, not unstoppable by any means) are ignoring the fact that she's Helm fucking Hammerhand's daughter and raised along two brothers in a culture that values riding and strength. Her older brother single-handedly killed a whole group riding a Mumakill and the mumakill itself with a single axe. She defeated two different men in single combat, both of which she clearly struggled in and got some assistance in both. People do not need to be treating her like she's the most powerful or badass character in the film and try to use that as a reason to hate her and the film.
ОтветитьMe and my friends really liked it. The Watcher is on one hand memberberries, on the other it's very anime and fitting this movie.
I would have made Hera and Wolf kill each other for more dramatic/Shakespearian effect, but other than that it's fine.
Edit: we just saw it today xd
I'm a long time Tolkien nerd, and a long time wargamer. For me, part of what makes an adaptation worthwhile is if it "feels" like Middle Earth as I understand it, and if it makes me want to paint miniatures and play games in that setting.
War of the Rohirrim did both of those things for me. It "feels" right, and inspired me to paint hundreds of tiny Rohirrim and Dunlendings to play games with. I'd love to see more films done this way!
I enjoyed the movie mostly: 6.75/10. But in my eyes there are some flaws, it could be much better.
ОтветитьI'm tired of the "girl-boss" archetype where the main character is constantly talked up and butt kissed. It wasn't RoP but it wasn't good. It could have been good if they had Frealaf as the main character with Hera as a side character. They could have kept most of the same story beats but focused on the important people.
ОтветитьI’m going to cry now every time in Two Towers when the boy says his name is “Haleth, son of Hama.” 😭😭😭 The movie did a GREAT job with the emotional beats
ОтветитьSaw this a few days ago and, um... yeah. As an anime, it would work fine, but not for cinematic release. As middle earth, eh... Helm was boss. And that's basically the best parts. The mumak and watcher felt shoehorned in just to remind us it's Tolkien's work and it felt forced. The animation and dialogue often felt janky, especially Freca's hand movements at the start and Hera just chiming in to a military discussion she walks past and leaving immediately after her lines. The worst parts for me were the annoying characters - Olwyn (who? Yeah, exactly) who basically mary sues her way through the film, and the announcer kid whose name i forgot and don't care about - yes, this kid who tripped over his own feet dropping highly important documents is told "The [women and children] need a protector, you can do that" No. No he can't. No amount of suspension of disbelief is going to help here. All those people are going to die. And the costumes. Hera literally looks like a scifi anime and maybe once looked like she belonged in middle earth. Let us not speak of the insane siege tower...
All in all, not as bad as rings of power, but too close for comfort. 3/10
Helm is basically Hrothgar from Beowulf. And Héra is strongly based on Lady Æthelflæd of Merica from English history
ОтветитьYoystan i would be very curious: do you consider this part of the Canon? That would be a very interesting verdict.
ОтветитьWhy did this show underperform so badly? I've never seen it yet. Amazon just ruined me with their vomit they called Wheel of Time and Rings Of Power. Any suggestions before I watch this show or just jump in?
ОтветитьThank you for giving your honest thoughts. I liked the film over all. There were some issues I had with the film, but it didn't bother me too much.
ОтветитьHelm himself is amazing and really proves the idea that for a country to be strong it needs a strong leader. Not a dictator but a person who is unafraid and confronts challenges.
ОтветитьLiked hearing the Howard Shore themes, seeing the orcs looking for rings (voiced by Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan). Saruman at the end.
ОтветитьThe next adaptation I'd like to see from the Third Age is the Kin Strife.
ОтветитьIdk I had fun with the movie why can’t people just have fun and it was beautifully animated I know most people I work with will just regurgitate the negative talking points and then when u say just have fun they get offended it’s just a shame
ОтветитьI'm sorry, but OG sounds completely biased in favor of the movie. I've followed this channel almost from day one, and will completely following it. However, this video give the impression that you loved the movie to the point that you're willing to ignore some glaring problems with it. Maybe the Rings of Power made you lower the bar, I didn't watch it so I wouldn't know. I do know that I had numerous moments were I was dumbstruck by the bad writing and the stupid dialogs. Time and time again I was rolling my eyes at the the cliche lines. My brother and sister, who are not versed in the lore like myself, felt the same- it was simply bad cinematography. Speaking of the lore, the writers went wild in the places they could, that is places were no specific information is available. I didn't feel Helm's character was faithful enough to the original. Stubborn he might have been, but to depict him as stupid is, well, stupid. Rohan had enough at it's plate, it didn't need it's king making consecutive mistakes to fall. Comatose Helm is even less likely. Orcs and trolls in Helm's deep looking for rings is a fan service written by someone who doesn't understand the fanbase. Eagles interacting with Hera is not impossible, just very unlikely. Wulf being driven by vengeance is likely, but it is a fact that he stayed at Meduseld, and it was there, not in Hornburg, that Frealaf defeated him, with "a small company of desperate men."
I can go on but I think I established my case: as a story which stands on it's own it suffers from weak writing, bad dialogs and cliche lines. As part of Tolkien's universe it's not faithful enough to the source material and it takes liberties which aren't lore friendly. A difference in taste can explain why I perceived the movie differently from the OG. However, the way he ignores the movie's fault, at the very least those related to the way it treats the spirit of the original material, seems very odd to me.
While thankfully, the movie failed, so hopefully they get the message and stop with the LOTR flavored girlboss slop.
ОтветитьIt was quite good. The only thing I would change is having Frealaf kill Wulf instead of Hera to show he was still loyal to Rohan, but otherwise, it was well done.
ОтветитьThank you for this 😊
ОтветитьMy girlfriend pointed it out to me but the flashback was so important because it shows wulf lose his temper and stop sparing and actually try and hurt hera, and hera was able to still beat him without trying to hurt him
I think that added context to wulf.
He didn't lose to the son of helm but the daughter adding to the scorn he got for being a dunlending
Personally, I just find it hard to believe that a great king of Rohan can be an arrogant fool that makes bad decisions again and again. Also, I see the actions by the characters but there is no consistent logic behind those actions. I find it difficult to understand why they acted as they did, except for the fact that the script writers wrote it so. I don't think there was any character development in this story because if there was, at least we would, over the course of the movie, understand why the characters acted the way they did. It was like each character was given a label (like "arrogant king" and "blinded by vengeance") and that label became the reason for their actions rather than an actual train of thought based on deeper character background and the unfolding situation.
ОтветитьI didn't like it
ОтветитьI loved this movie
ОтветитьI agree, there could have been more context for Hera, especially her past friendship with Wulf. Just when I was thinking that we should get a flashback or something to show us their friendship, we got one, but it didn't really reveal much. But that's about all the criticism I have, the movie was quite good. I hope we see more films like this (fingers crossed for an eventual FA series!).
ОтветитьLol "done well".
Another ballwashing review.
The movie stinks
Marxist subversive girlbossing.
Pulled in 2 weeks..
Yeah, it was a barnburner.
Reviewing this while everything is fresh in my mind:
I factually loved this movie so much, i just got home from seeing it (my sister went with me to see it as a Christmas present to me, she got us tickets T^T i feel spoiled lol)
I want to go see this again, its so good.
I loved the way they depicted Helm Hammerhand, he feels like the main character in every scene he's in, he dominates every scene he's in, he does everything that he does in his story, the only real change being that you are seeing him from Hera's perspective..
So, Hera...
I love her, so much
She's everything that Eowyn wanted to model herself after in my view, she's fierce and strong and loving and devoted to her family, protective of her home and her people, but she does show vulnerability and emotional depth, she loves her family so much and i love that what she really consistently wants is to protect them.
She is so thankfully /not/ a "girlboss" character, that being in my view.. a female (in name only) who comes in and overpowers and proves to be smarter than all of the men in her life, men who are frequently depicted as being unintelligent to the point of self-destructive while essentially dismissing her for her gender only to be proven wrong, that doesn't happen here, the only thing in the movie that comes anywhere close is Helm refusing to let her fight /because he wants to protect her/ which is proven to be justified considering the direction that the movie takes..
Hera is not overpowered, in actuality most every fight she gets into she wins because she isn't alone, her family protects her quite a great deal which I love
Mild spoler with this part:
Even her "fighting in a dress" has an explanation that i kind of loved.. which is... she was deliberately doing something that she knew would anger Wulf so that he would fixate on her while her people escaped the siege they are under, she was acting as a diversion hoping to keep him distracted until help arrived.. XD i love that she literally did it to tick him off...
Which does not at all go well for her, because she is badly outmatched in this exchange, she isn't an invincible heroine by any stretch of the imagination, she's a smart one, who does something to enable victory ahead of time and has a lot of outside help during
Unlike her father who is a wrecking ball who terrorizes /armies/ unarmed, by himself, without a weapon. He's /so cool/ ❤❤ ❤ T^T i loved him so much.
His sons as well, so naturally this movie made me hurt, but Hama especially is so sweet with his music playing..
End spoilers
I will say, the animation is a little rough near the beginning, it sort of seemed like the characters were sort of "floating" through their environment, and sometimes the animation felt a little.. odd..
But that was mostly near the beginning during the setup of the story, it smooths out as the plot gets to the more action heavy scenes, or i just got used to it?
Either way, it was a little odd, I got over it but i think it could have been done better if the characters had been more.. grounded (is that the word?) In their environment, like a lot of the other anime I've watched..
For the music...
The music was /so good/
As soon as that Rohan theme played i felt like i was watching the lord of the rings films again, i loved that so much.
And the end credits theme, The Rider, will never not make me feel /happy/ inside, i love that song so much, its so good, especially because they had it accompany the artwork like they did with lotr and the hobbit.
Overall.. this film was amazing to me, i want to see it again, it deserves so much better snd so much more praise than it has gotten, best Christmas gift ever was seeing this with my sister, who doesn't like anime, but still liked this movie~
I was mostly bored by the movie, not really passionately invested in it. The only times where I felt irritated was when they poached lines or moments from the Jackson movies for memberberry purposes, where I just go, hey you stole that put that back. In terms of heras character I saw it more as a brave scenario where she was very typical of that sort of movie and I’ve seen that sort of things a few times so it needs to be something a bit more impressive in order for me to rate it highly. It’s definitely better than rings of power but I just wasn’t impressed by this.
ОтветитьJust saw it and thought it was terrible. Glad you liked it but this shit was garbage
Ответить🎉 Best Movie Ever 😃! Unfortunately nobody watched it and it lost all the money 💴 FLOP!
ОтветитьThank you for calling out the insincerity of the girl boss claims. Helm was super human... There are so many male characters in Tolkien's books and everywhere in culture. My little girl is constantly asking for movies with girls, she wants to see herself in these stories. As a female fan of Tolkien I am so excited and glad for this story to share with my daughter.
ОтветитьWhen me and my roomate went... we were the only 2 people in the entire theater....
ОтветитьI wish they incorporated the real actress for Éowyn, Miranda Otto and then open a book that has a similar art style using the alchemical medieval methods, zoom into it eventually to where the book art comes alive and then we enter into the movie... then we coild get more Faramir too who unified and revived Ithilien and which allowed a host of elves to migrate there and live there for a long time. ❤
ОтветитьFor the conservative audience of lore, it is a negative situation that the story is not told from Helm's perspective, but due to the nature of the adaptations, the preference for the storytelling from Hèra's perspective, as a character at the center of events due to her desired marriage to Wulf, adds a deeper layer to the narrative. The "strong independent warrior woman profile", which is often included in such productions due to today's modern culture, does not stand out because it is incorporated into the dynamics of the story. Even though it has been adapted relatively well, the Rings of Power series excites me more.
ОтветитьSorry what? A good adaptation? My friend they even fk'd up coming straight out of the gate with the name out of the gate. 'Hera' That isn't Anglo Saxon or Norse inspired that's bloody Greek. This is Tolkien, that stuff matters damn it. But you want to know how they could of screwed that up, because Hera isn't hardly mentioned let alone given a name. This is Helms story so why not just make it about Helm. The animation looks great and the voice acting is top class but the characters are so weak and yeah I can kind of agree that Hera isn't the most girl bossy of girl bosses in this movie but it still falls into the trope of everyone should of listened to me, despite the fact she is not a warrior nor trained for anything like this and everyone would of been alright.
ОтветитьHonestly, its funny that there was less wacky action in a lotr anime than the hobbit trilogy 💀
ОтветитьI wish general thargg would have gotten a bit more background and his reasons for staying with wulf.
ОтветитьI thought the film was just ok. ROP was more satisfying to watch to be honest.
ОтветитьI found the movie very beautiful. It undoubtedly conveys the Tolkienesque and fantasy atmosphere, unlike Rings of Power, where the dialogues seem taken from ordinary conversations of our times. In The War of the Rohirrim, everything is faithful to the fantasy atmosphere. I see nothing wrong with the fact that Hera is an invented character.
ОтветитьIf the animation was smoother, I'd give it a 9/10. No real complaints otherwise.
ОтветитьI liked the movie as much as you, but it lacked the character depth and dialogue from the trilogy. It is obvious why, but that' s what makes me disagree on the presence of a seemingly "tolkien" feel you praise.
ОтветитьNo this movie made Helm seem weak. So so very weak. His orginally story was so badass dying like an ice statue. Now he passes his mentle to some non-named character Tolkien would never have accepted. Made her brothers pathetic. And no way in hell could she kill a mumakill, just plain no way. Not even the eagles would respond to a numenorian high man, let alone a nobody no named middlemen women, thats a joke.
Making Wolf a simp for this nobody also was just disgusting.
Rem Eoewyn was a sheild maiden in disguse, not on merit, there were no sheild maidens before her, so that is just a lie.😅
😅😂
Had so much respect for your channel until this review. 😢
Man punches horns off a demonic beast much larger than him: OK.
Womam beats man in a sword fight: no, that's too unrealistic.
While not perfect, this is an AMAZING adaptation. I hope for more like it! Well done to all who worked on it.
