I just notice this the human mages are using is the demon-lethal zoltrakk (white one) that's why it's not much like lethal when you got shot with however Lernen is using the human-lethal zoltrakk (black one) and also a seemingly rounded one at that which can break the defensive shield effectively

It’s crazy because fern is only CHOOSING to use multiple Zoltraak to overwhelm her. But it’s unlikely that it’s the only offensive spell she knows. Imagine if she used 8 different spells at you all at once while you can use one at a time to counter only one of the spells she is throwing at you.

Remember : If one Zoltraak does not works, then use more Zoltraak.

By the end of this test most mages are out of mana, and yet Frieren and Fern were unfazed and shows no signs of mana deficiency at all. Both of them are monsters among those mages.

Reminder that Zoltrak is a "basic/ordinary" spell that INSTANTLY kills you if it hits you just once, and it only became "basic" and easy to defend against because it got researched like hell to counter it because it caused so many deaths.

So yes, spamming it until an enemy mage is overwhelmed, runs out of mana, and/or slips-up is a valid tactic. Since Fern has mastered it from being the only combat spell she uses, she can fire it off without needing to think about using other spells so she can focus more on the actual battle happening.

Those Who doesn't know, the defense magic use allot of mana than the attack magic it selft, and now day magician use 3-4 cube of shield for standard def for per attack, thus when she attack alot , it gonna eat up enemy mana to defend, also fern being teach to use 1 cube for defend for each attack, so if enemy attack that she did, she can defend it longer

while entertaining I found this arc to be stupid. The leadership of this nation put their most prized and promising magic users (who are rare to begin with) in a battle against each other where killing was not only allowed but preferred in some cases. All for a useless title basically saying 'your a really strong mage'... a generation of promising magic users dead. Not to protect their homeland, not to battling rival kingdoms, heck not even to street thugs. all for a useless title that will, in all likelihood never be mentioned again in the series.

Fern got a real time experience with defending against zoltraak so she knew overwhelming ehre with more number of attacks can drain her dry 😂😂
