I think a way they could introduce people to raids without diluting them is to bring raid lairs back but with a twist. The raid lairs are only 1 or 2 encounters of a specific raid for that day or week. It's not any easier, it's just shorter. In my experience, most people don't raid due to the long time commitment.

I'm going to be honest, I've not had a single problem with the door in the final encounter. So far I have died once to it, and not during my solo, just I was stupid and turned around for a rez. But besides that, two shots from a special open it the entire way, ya just run through.

About the "taking a break" thing: there's a VERY notorious clip of the Game Director for Dead by Daylight telling players that if the game is pissing them off to "go play Civ or something", which, while worded poorly, was blown SO out of proportion at the time and continues to be because people just don't wanna accept that you can take a break from a game. Yes, the balance in the game at the time was also abysmal dogwater and needed to be changed, but it's still crazy to me that people took "go play a game that doesn't piss you off" as a massive personal attack.

And a second point about the whole "directed" discussion and if destiny should get it or not and all the talk about gatekeeping being a good thing an XYZ: Johan Pilestedt, who was the CEO turned CCO/Game Director on Helldivers 2 was constantly being pestered to add a PvP function to the game because the gunplay is just so goddamn good, and they've pushed back on that idea time and time again, and finally he ended up saying "A game for everyone is a game for no one", and that right there has stuck with me since. You can't try to make a game work for everyone, it just doesn't work ever. It's why Directed Mode, despite knowing why it's there and thinking it's a fine idea, is something I kinda don't agree with anymore. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

This video is 2 months old and this has probably already been mentioned, but I believe WoW now has a mode that is even EASIER than Looking For Raid (LFR). It's called story mode, you get put in a group with 9 NPC companions who fill whichever rolls you aren't currently occupying. The mechanics of the raid are (to my knowledge) vastly watered down to the point of barely being a challenge. All this to say, your example of LFG difficulty is interesting given that they've given a difficulty even easier than LFG, various difficulties seem cool but from my experience with WoW (and seemingly your experience in destiny) Bungie will never satiate people who don't want to/can't put in the time to do difficult content but want all the shiny things from them.

This whole chat is great! I do slightly disagree with him saying destiny isnt as hard as people make it out to be. My only defense towards that would be if he didnt have the best raiders to play the game helping him would the difficulty experience be different also a contest dungeon is definitely easier than contest raids. Managing 3 people is much easier than 6. Also sundered was a bit of an easier dungeon also so I would like to see what his thoughts would be if he did salvations raid on contest.

its very fun to see that milo simply being here and saying "wow this stuff is really cool" make people remember that destiny is actually really good and fun when you get down to it. like obviously not perfect, no game ever is, but the core game is just... very good. I mean, look at all the other live service looter shooters that came and died in the past 10 years. llike actually died, no longer exists, no updates, etc

also, on schizo-theorizing in zombies, i remember LITERAL YEARS of some of these theories. I remember that a treyarch dev mentioned that you could get the Type 99 in Der Riese and it kicked off years of investigation into every corner of that map, when the actual answer was that while there was a Type 99 machine gun that was in the game, it wasn't on the map. what he was actually referring to was the Arisaka rifle, which is also designated as Type 99 and was in the box. I also remember a long running investigation on whether you could open one door on Ascension with a Death Machine if you completed the easter egg and used the one you get from that, but i cannot for the life of me remember what they thought was behind that door. Also you couldn't open the door. There was a lot of that in pre-Black Ops 2 Zombies, no idea why it stopped there though, maybe a heavier emphasis on story?

I like Milo but he's wrong about destiny dying if they introduced explore /guided modes for raids/dungeons. He's playing with content who've done the raids multiple times.

Destiny can't sustain spending the time and money to build large form content like raids - that will only be seen by a fraction of the player base, while simultaneously building content accessible to everyone that's also interesting enough to retain players.

Also, rite of the nine has been great so far.

I feel Milo has the better arguments for casuals to have more and easier access to high end content rewards and making stuff like raids casual even if there’s a separate mode for these content. Datto saying an LFG is needed but Milo had a better argument and explained that an LFG isn’t needed because if there’s an easier raid like Root that hooks people then they’ll be hooked to play more and different/harder raids. There doesn’t need to be a separate diluted version of every raid just a beginner raid that encourages people to play it first so people get hooked. Which is what Vault did for a lot of the first players. Datto saying there’s 10,000 people who want an easy mode per 1 person who wants authentic difficulty is just ridiculous. When he stops needing to make guides anymore because it’s so accessibly easy to figure out how to do hard end content then Destiny at its core has died. I understand what he’s saying but I think he’s wrong in his hope/solution. Dattos argument is basically simplifying and making access easier for more people but those people are people who don’t really want to be invested already and are on for short times. Thats why there are casual activities. Raids should never be casual activities. Milo’s argument in saying that raids need to be stay harder to access for lower skilled players and stay in a way exclusive to those who take the leap to attempt and invest the high end tier of content. One of the greatest things about Destiny was the social aspect that drove it. Every new location you never see people interacting with random people and that was last in D1 with the opening of VOG being in a social area on Venus. If 6 randoms see 6 raiders doing a raid encounter that sparks interest. Milo’s right on all accounts and if players really want to try a raid they will. If Destiny is to survive it needs to retain that sense of wonderment and excitement when overcoming an incredible feat or figuring something out. Destiny has walls of skill and understanding to climb and we should keep it like that to keep it intriguing for both veterans and new people

To add on to the argument for/against and lfg difficulty for raids, in my opinion the main thing walling off new players from experiencing raids is not the content itself. My first experience with Destiny was getting into the game at Destiny 2 launch, I had always seen content from Destiny but never played because I don't play shooters on console (I am dogshit with a controller). I took a heavy liking to the game and steadily progressed through all the content I could get my hands on until I got to raids. The first thing that went through my head was not "I can't figure out the mechanics" it was instead "How long will my team be willing to put up with me learning and mastering the mechanics." I am an avid lfg raider and I have been with a wide range of groups, but the one consistency was toxicity between players. People in Destiny will get mad at you for the smallest mistakes or infractions on their gameplay experience, which ties back slightly to the "people don't want to play destiny" talk. Most people who play raids DO NOT want their time wasted and are not willing to help someone learn how to do a raid. Sherpas are fantastic and the couple times I've been personally sherpa'd through a raid it was amazing (shoutout murduer's gub if you ever see this) but not many people are willing to take the time and show people how to get into endgame content. And even after they learn the raid, people are still very toxic to each other and create an environment that does not make people want to come back again. Personally, we do not need and lfg difficulty for raids, players in endgame content need to be more willing to help people learn and they need to be more civil towards each other. Maybe there are people out there who genuinely think that the mechanics are too hard, but in my subjective experience it has never been the difficulty of raids that drives people away; it's the social pressure from other players.
