He was shot a few years before this by a cop They called it an "accidental discharge" while being surrounded by police officers after he was involved in an accident. As far as I know he didn't get any compensation. If you listen closely at the beginning when he first comes outside he mentions it that they already shot him once. This is why they all know who he is too This is why he's so standoffish.

Yes I'm sure drugs are involved along with a lot of anger fear depression sadness etc.
