Geojedo Island, a second largest Island next to Jejudo is famous for it’s beautiful scenery with warm climate all year round and swelling blue sea. It is a sea resort city surrounded by the blue sea and is also the world’s undisputed number one shipbuilding city.

DSME( Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) is located in OKpo bay where admiral Yi Sun-shin won his first battle build upon4.3 m2 area of landwith best equipments such as world’s best 900 ton goliath crane and million ton scale dry dock of the size of 8 soccer fields with 26.000 employees.

Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje Shipyard, world’s number 1 high technology/ high value shipbuilding has 7 dock that could produce 70 ship and 10 marine equipment a year.

Currntly, Korea’s shipbuilding industry is now confronted with many difficulties due to a downward of global shipbuilding industry. however, korean shipbuilders have their own competitive expertise and technology. It seems that the shipbuilding industry might be recovered slowly as Daewoo and Samsung received an order worth of 5 trillion won (Appoxi, USD 4.7 billion) last year.

In addition to the main tourist attractions, Geojedo Island also provides a dark tourism course, the POW Camp Historic Park, a tribute to a sad chapter in Korea’s modern history.

After the outbreak of the Korean war on June 25, 1950, 150,000 North Koreans and 20,000 Chinese were held as war prisoners in the Geoje POW camp after the signing of truce agreement on July 27,1953, most prisoners were sent back and then the camp were closed in the site. The Camp shows then-camp life on the basis of then –documents and records. it is now popular as global attractions.

Mr. Yoon Byeong-chun, Marine Tourism Director of Geoje City said that 7 million tourist visited Geojedo last year including 70,000 foreigners.
Geoje attracts tourists as it has many beautiful sightseeing places such as Haegeumgang islets (rock island), Windy Hill, Oedo Botania (1.000 plant species), Jisim-do(Dongbaekseom), Geoje POW Camp Historic Park, sea food and good accomodations, he added.

It seems that Geojedo takes two tracks to attract tourists as well as making an effort to regain the past glory of shipbuilding industries.
