Redondo Beach:
Redondo Beach, Spanish for round, is a coastal city in Los Angeles County and is one of three adjacent beach cities along the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay. The primary attractions include the Municipal Pier and the sandy beach, which is popular with tourists and a variety of sports enthusiasts. The ocean side of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) has restaurants and boating activities while inland of PCH is largely residential.
Beach:
Much of the Redondo Beach lifestyle is a blend of the neighborhoods, activities and people of the three Beach Cities of Southern California's South Bay. Like its sister cities of Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, Redondo's draw is the beach that links the three cities. The beach starts below the bluffs of Palos Verdes in the south and carries north to the Redondo Pier. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail runs from Torrance through South Redondo, north to Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and eventually to Santa Monica. The path is broken by the Redondo Beach King Harbor Marina and Pier complex, where it veers away from water and onto dedicated lanes of surface streets for about a mile before again turning to the ocean.
Redondo Beach Pier:
The pier started out as a disjointed group of wharves, where ships used to dock to load and unload cargo or passengers. Near the end of the 19th century the pier evolved into an interconnected structure after a series of storms and demolitions throughout the 20th century. Due to all these disasters, the pier was rebuilt with modern reinforced concrete. Construction was completed in 1995 but subsequent attempts to resuscitate the area's popularity have been challenged by the need to comply with the California Coastal Act requirements as interpreted and applied by the Coastal Commission and the failure of the city to develop a plan residents are willing to support. Nevertheless, even with loss in popularity there still are quite a few people that do come visit the pier and with its beautiful views of the sea, as well as many shops and eateries all in walking distance of the pier, it still
Fishing on the pier:
Fishing is free from the Redondo Beach Pier. You do not need a license or permit to fish from the pier; however, you must fish in the designated areas. If you don't have your own rod, renting a fishing rod is possible at the cost of around $9 for the day, and containers of bait which start at $4.50. Many fishermen at the Redondo Beach Pier fish just for sport and do catch-and-release however, some people do fish to eat their catch. Even so, the fish contamination education collaborative does warn not to eat white or black croaker, barred sand bass, topsmelt, or barracuda. With that being said this a great area for beginners or aficionados to try their hand at fishing.
Redondo Beach Seaside Properties:
Redondo beach has a lot of spectacular properties, but they do come at a price. Properties within walking distance of the ocean routinely sell for over $1 million. Money Magazine ranks communities in the area as some of the most expensive places to live in the U.S. The average three-bed, two-bath home costs about $1,000,000 in South Redondo as of 2006 and $875,000 in North Redondo. Even though some areas of Redondo are popular surfing spots, the beach adjacent to the beach has extremely calm waters. This is due to the many breakwaters that are placed in and around this beach. These breakwaters are structures that are constructed near the coasts as part of coastal management or to protect an anchorage from the effects of waves and longshore drift. Since the intensity of the wave action in inshore is reduced, this makes it the perfect beach for swimming and all of the water activities that Redondo has to offer.
