my theme for April was a specific style of Ukrainian folk art known as Petrykivka. I learned so much about different techniques and styles, and I hope you enjoy this theme. If you would like to learn more or see ways to help, keep reading below.
I love using my bujo as both a site for planning, and a sort of artistic portfolio to learn new styles and learn about other traditions. It's also a way for me to put something good into helping, rather than just sitting with the helplessness. Researching and learning about these pieces of art has been really rewarding, but also really sobering. So many of the museums and works of art and artisans and people engaged in preservation- we just have no idea if they are still alive, still standing. The poem I chose for the cover page is by a Ukrainian poet, Ilya Kaminsky: "We Lived Happily During the War", and I chose it because it reflects this intense "I should be doing more" feeling, and the "watching the world fall apart" feeling, of existing right now. The quote on the last page is from a poem "as the sun sets and hills grow dark" by an older Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko, who was persecuted and exiled for much of his life. If you are able, please consider giving to one of the charities/aid resources below.
