I was just old enough to be there when WaW launched and I remember discovering Nazi Zombies. The absolute HYPE that was spread amongst the boys was real. I remember the DLCs and the growing fan lore with each map. It was truly a lightning in a bottle kind of moment that you truly had to be there in order to genuinely appreciate it.

The way the mode was included as just some special thing after beating the game was a legendary decision. I’ll never forget beating WAW back then and being greeted with zombies for the first time. It was a truly once in a lifetime experience.

I think what they forgot in later games was that the real magic behind zombies was its simplicity. Both in terms of gameplay and story. I kind of wish it stuck to that more.

At the very least, they should've made more simple maps to balance things out. The devs kind of forgot that many things felt so cool in zombies because it was rare or unexpected. They should be Easter Eggs, not objectives.

I love the original idea for Nazi Zombies. I get no AAA studio has the guts to make a WW2 game centered around a German protagonist but it'd still be awesome. And yes, I had a great grandfather that served in WW2. He wouldn't have cared.

The game is almost as scary as the implications of that wallpaper behind you.

In retrospect, the dark aether storyline we have now is closer to the direction Treyarch went with Verrukt. Experiments that went wrong and opened the gates of hell. I have a theory that the story for zombies was originally going to be a sort of purgatory or hell, and the overarching theme was going to be the players attempting to escape it. Or it could’ve just been eternal suffering.
