Give Me A Sign somewhat embodies the emotional struggle in caring for my single, very disabled mother. She grew up in a broken home and her traumas combined with the stress of a difficult 2nd pregnancy (resulting in a 2nd caesarian) manifested physically with multiple chronic pain conditions. Pretty much all of the supportive family members passed in my early childhood (they were elders anyway, but it still sucks). When I was ten, I witnessed her have a small stroke. Since I was around 16 and her health declined, I took on the role of caregiver as best I can.
This song always hits home, and hard. I've had to talk her up from suicidal thoughts many times, as she feels massive guilt at needing her sons to care for her, calling herself a burden. When she tearfully urges me to 'go live life' I always reply, "Life without you would be very hollow". I'm not one to prolong someone's suffering either, so I do feel selfish sometimes in asking her to live on, in constant agony. I know that with her illnesses there's going to be a day that I'm not going to have a say in her staying... I can never sing along without breaking into tears at "I can feel you falling away".
To anyone reading this, for whatever reason this song resonates within you, just know that even if you're fighting what feels like a losing battle, that effort likely means a great deal. Sometimes getting a sense of victory just isn't possible.
