It's funny, I watched your video of the failed movie Sahara, now this one, and I see the next being Lone Ranger.... these are some of my favorite movies because of their originality (and no I've never read any books that relate to them). Great job Hollywood as usual, and the public wants what the public wants, I guess at the time nobody cared about this and only wanted "known" franchises.... still do I guess. Hope they all fail, and the big budgets go away, then the public will maybe see the other side of wanting some entertainment for their "artistic" and original depictions

I really enjoyed this movie when it came out. I wasn’t aware of all the behind-the-scenes drama at the time, and since the internet wasn’t as accessible to me, I probably missed a lot of that context. But I remember thinking the CGI looked great, and even in the clips shown in this video, it still holds up pretty well. However, now that I'm more used to newer technology, if I were to revisit it, I might start to notice some flaws that weren’t obvious before.

Personally, I think casting "unknown" actors can be really effective for storytelling. I would have preferred seeing a fresh face over a well-known actor because it helps keep the focus on the story itself. Plus, if the movie becomes a hit, those actors can become closely associated with their characters—like how the Harry Potter actors are so tied to their roles.

As for the point about sticking closely to the source material, I’m not sure if that’s true, but if it is, I think it was the right call. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a director or writer’s attempt to put their own twist on a story turn out better than sticking to the original.

Btw a great problem with the movie was the script, the story had a ton of things to do nice, but the movie was uneven, it would have done better if the movie at least were a good movie. I like it thought, I apreciated the craft, yet at that time only people who knew the autor watched it

This is a great movie, and I'm heartbroken every time I'm reminded of how badly it bombed. It was SO let down by its marketing—every single thing they did turned audiences away. It's actually insane when you watch the official trailer and a fanmade trailer side by side how much of a disservice was done to the movie by idiotic Disney execs.

Bryan Cranston wasn’t a big name at the time. More of a well respected character and comic actor.

My brother and I were at one of our friend's house waiting for him to go off work. He end up having to work a double so our friend's parents just invited us to go to the movies with him. We went to we went to see this and we had no idea what the movie even was, we never even heard of it. End up being awesome. Having an alien that was basically a giant dog was hilarious

Disney has a habit of trying to combine multiple books into a single movie (see The Black Cauldron). Love this movie but the books are far better.

An arguably even greater influence on contemporary science fiction such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, characters such as the Green Lantern, the Jedi, etc, can be traced back to the works of one E. E. "Doc" Smith, who wrote the Lensmen and Skylark of Space sagas, respectively. Even Asimov, Clarke, Herbert, et al., were influenced by him. "Doc" Smith is basically the Tolkien of space opera---eveything that seems cliched or tropes now originated with his stories, which were written for the pulps in the 1930s and 1940s. If you consider yourself a fan of space opera but don't know about Doc Smith or haven't read his books, it's like saying you're a fantasy fan but have never read LoTR. I highly encourage you to look him up if you've never heard of him. We wouldn't have galaxy-spanning civilizations, psychic combat, faster-than-light space drives, deflector shields, alien conspiracies, superweapons, planet-sized space stations, robotic soldiers, genetic manipulation, and grand, epic space battles that are unparralleled in size and scope if it wasn't for Doc Smith and his stories. Stop reading this and google him right now.

So, because of this review, I decided to go watch this movie. It was AMAZING. It could have been an entire franchise. It made me remember of when I watched the first Ironman, that's how good I felt it was.
I'll never forgive Disney for destroying this opportunity.

John Carter of Mars (Yes I use that as the whole title) is my absolute, number 1, favorite film of all times. Yes it is IMMENSELY sad and frustrating that Disney gave up on this movie before it even came out. Disney directly caused the failure of this film. Disney completely messed up the marketing. I, along with many others, believe that Disney purposely put forward poor quality marketing because they wanted it to fail. Not only because of Star Wars, but because of a personal vendetta against the director Andrew Stanton. He wrote about the connecting stories John Carter: The Gods of Mars and John Carter: Warlord of Mars and how we would have seen John grow in his personal journey with his new family on mars. I sincerely hope that at some point these films can become a reality.

This film entirely passed me by when it came out. I came across a version of it by accident while browsing a fan-edit site, downloaded the fan-edit, watched it, and thought it was 'fine'. Not 'great', not 'bad', it was 'fine'...
...had I known about the film in the first place, and seen the fan-edit in the cinema, I'd probably have been satisfied enough to go see a sequel. I wonder how bad the original was compared to the edit (no, I'm can't be bothered to find out) and how badly the marketing misfired?

As it happens, this was in the days before I became convinced Disney is evil (no point in mincing my words) and won't ever see a penny of mine go in the direction of this monstruous corporation ever again.

Agree with a lot of the comments here. Just to add a little fuel to the fire...... the lack of respect for the sorce material and treatment of the characters here was a precurser to how the Mouse House was going to treat Star Wars. Go back and watch how this movie unfolds and then compare it to how the last trilogy does. Mind Blown.
Your Welcome. See ya on the next one.

So much potential here. Imagine a world where this had the "Wizard of Oz" style treatment. The opening on Earth is shot like an old western, black and white with sepia tone, then Mars is in full colour, shot partly on location and partly in a Volume style setup. Could be epic

Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter Of Mars was a GREAT & FANTASTIC book series. I actually liked Disney's film adaptation of it, BUT John Carter's super-strength should have been more like the books. In the books, John Carter was able to leap "only" 30 feet, instead of "flying" like Superman in the Disney Movie. It would have made the movie more "grounded" and "realistic".
