I am from Germany and I moved to Tulum BEFORE pandemic. I have a working permission visa. I didn't come with money. Even if Tulum was growing a lot it was more about tourism. After pandemic a lot of people moved there to make business. Before they all came all ceremonies or yoga classes were donation based. Later it said "minimum 500 pesos donation". And it increased. When it's a donation people can probably work (or think they can) without working permissions. People in Tulum still work for less than 500 Pesos/day. Rents went up. Because the people from the states thought "wow only 600$ rent - thats cheap". It wasn't and isn't for the locals. Rents are higher than in Germany now. I had to leave Tulum because I wasn't able to effort it anymore because of that kind of people. But enjoy our home...

neocolonization and gentrification encarnated in tuluminatis. You come and pollute this wonderful ecosistems that you claim as your paradise and at the same time you make prices go up making it unafordable for locals to live were they used to. This happened to a friend from Bacalar who couldnt move from her mothers hose when she finished her studies because with her salary she cant aford any place in her own natal town. Maybe not all of you , there might be respectful ways of migrating but it is a true probles. Even the water tests made recently show how its been seriously polluted in the years all this has been ocurring to tullum.

There’s exactly zero chance that Tulum is the future. It’s way, way overpriced, it’s elevation is too low and susceptible to flooding, and the sargassum is a stank problem that won’t go away. The sewer infrastructure is a joke. The entire area will destroy the ground water in short order. Place is a mess overrun by annoying narcissists calling themselves influencers 😂😂😂

Hopefully they decide to BUILD A SEWAGE SYSTEM since it doesn't have one! Most of the sewage goes straight to the ocean or dumped in the mangroves. The first year of COVID was great!! Hardly any people...All the animals started coming out again. The water was clearer and it was more quiet! But then the 2nd year people flocked here like flys. In Tulum it was so awful and they were partying and not thinking about the locals or others. People were getting sick...And the cost there is ridiculous! It's become extremely gentrified. I don't go over there anymore. It's become an Instagram destination. They even turned one of the sacred centoes into a party drinking and techno music...I couldn't believe it. We went there to relax. These people have lieterally destroyed Tulum!

Great video, however, the cell service and internet connection in general are not great there. I lived in Playa del Carmen for a year and spent a lot of time in Tulum on longer trips, but had to come back due to unreliability. You also need a car in most parts of Tulum to get around. The taxi prices are insane compared to other parts of Mexico including Mexico City and Playa del Carmen.

Anyone that has ever visited Mexico knows my people are kind, welcoming and respectful, so we expect the same back if you’re gonna live here. Calling yourselves “expats” because the word immigrant now has a bad connotation and association that Americans made sure to turn into and have been using it as an insult too over the years is just straight up funny and disrespectful to my people, My people have endured being called all sorts of things over the last decades so NO we are not allowing you to come here and call yourselves “expats”, you are an immigrant and should wear it proudly.

So many Americans started coming . That’s when I said enough . I look forward to Island hopping in Greece with better food, weather and safety .
