Thunderbolt 3 in AMD system

I'm tempted to try this out on my Gigabyte Designare X399 motherboard equipped with a Threadripper 1950X.

I know that Wendell over at Level1Techs did originally get TB3 support working on X399 with my exact motherboard, although that was with the less plug & play option due to being an older TB3 chipset (Alpine Ridge vs the Titan Ridge controller used on the card that you feature in this video).

And many people are reporting that this new TB3 Titan-Ridge card from Gigabyte is essentially plug & play on most AMD X399 motherboards, which is great!

My only concern is whether it would work within Linux or not......
I shall have to do some further research to find that out :)



Great video, good sense of humor, thanks for sharing your experience with the world, it makes a difference to those wanting to try it but that are unsure about it (Because it isn't exactly a cheap thing to get, just to try and find out it won't work and have to go through the refund process).



It will be interesting to see if USB 4.0 provides the same features as Thunderbolt 3 for PCI-E based device protocols. That would hopefully open up many more options in the future for upgrading older systems with newer GPUs or Audio Devices, Capture Cards, Monitors, etc.

That's pretty cool but at the same time... that's also a waste of resources. You are not using the Thunderbolt 3 to it's full potential. Usually people use TB3 for data transfer (ex external NVME SSD) or even external GPU dock (eGPU such as Razer Core).

Need 5 pin thunderbolt mobo connect which is on gigabyte x399 designare above sata ports on mobo....for external ssd thunderbolt speed. Thunderbolt for daisy chain external GPU external ssd mini dp or dp ..dongles for laptop not enough power 15w power brick or 12v? USB C dongle converter. Also can be expensive $39 cables. 4k ...I rather upgrade gpu. Only use i would have pci card data speed transfer for video edit on thunderbolt 40gbs or usb c 10gbs external ssd or drives...on workstation or dongle thunderbolt/ USB C for laptop. Thumb drives USB C or 3.0 are great too...with cable adapters/SD thumb/usb 2/3/c/ethernet hub

no problems at all? I have an AMD board with TB3 on it and I do have problems with my Apollo Twin X. I'm thinking of hackintoshing my PC or getting a board compatible with that pcie card and try again... the problem is that this board costed me 220€ (on sale) and it sucks to have to buy a new one

Hello..I am also a desperate and rookie guy to all this. I made a pc with Ryzen 7 2700 and for motherboard an Asus Prime X370 Pro. I orded an apollo X6 and yesterday night a found all this shit about thunderbolt 3 compatibility. So please, what can I do...this motherboard hasn't thunderbolt and I think that my motherboard doesn't have thunderbolt header!

Did your bios had a thunderbolt option? I checked out your motherboard and there seem to be no TB header.

The Rev one card has way too many issues on my board so I got rev 2 from taiwan. No additonal power supply or USB connections required. Just the PCI fit + THB cable and I have thunderbolt access at over 2500 on m.2. drives. The Rev 1 (when working) gave a misealy 700 on the same drive. The Rev 1 belongs in the bin. (SIMPLY BUY REV 2)

could you go into a little more detail on the jumper cable? What is the purpose of the jump, why 3 and 5, and is it bad to not do this step, will be doing it as it seems to work for you so I would like to try the same, but would like to know the theory as to why this choice was made. I have an Alpine Ridge (r.2) and a B450 Gaming Pro with Ryzen 7 3700x and an RTX2070 Super. I know It's not supposed to work but you wouldn't by any chance have heard of a way I could make it happen? Would it hurt to try what you've done with the Titan Ridge on the Alpine? There's a USBC port on my panel but I really need TB3.0 and don't really want to spend 300+ dollars for a new board.

Hey Man, cool Experiment and cool video really! I would like to connect my HP Reverb G2 VR Headset to a stable high power USB-C Port since the AMD X570 USB ports seem to struggle about this... This TB card has got like a 100W USB-C port and sounds like a perfect choice BUT did you say that especially the USB-C ports on this installment won't work?

So wait, you dont need to connect the GPIO cable to the motherboard? if you just jump pins 3/5 the card & mb dont need that?

Hey, is this the Gigabyte GC-Titan Ridge v1 or v2? Because I have an issue with my ryzen r5 3600 as I just bought a new Motu 8Pre-es and for some reason, ryzen and the usb connection don't work together. I was hoping I could hook it up via thunderbolt because otherwise, I have to send an interface worth 1400 euro back which would really really suck.

I was able to get this to work but there is a lot of crackle when I tried to record any music in my DAW with my Apollo in abelton there is a lot of static with microphone recordings also do you know any fix for this? I’m trying to research more people are saying something about wdm drivers? Not compatible

Does the card need to have a driver installed to work? like after you shorted the pin 3 & 5, did the card work ? or you still have to find the thunderbolt drivers? and where did you download the Thunderbolt drivers? thx

....Upgrade that PC to the awesome Corsair iCUE 5000X RGB in white & grey .... (or black, I like the white & grey version, white is "in style" along with blue & purple as the secondary colors, it seems) ... CASE, it is the only case with modern format that is "solid enough" to come close as one can get to thick steel and or aluminum everywhere ... (except on the front panel) ... so we will make do and place it second to the all time champion FT03 by silver-stone that I wish they would re-release, it was that GOOD / Solid as well as smart being a reversed case as in heat rises.... Also fits up to CEB MoBo beautifully perfect! ...... I am a case guy as well as MoBo & rare Xeons type of computer enthusiast .. that also games... occasionally often.... I am having huge problems finding a new MoBo for my XEON 2679 as basically ZERO motherboards say they support it, ZERO... LOL.. Also very little info about this monstrosity but one is in my hand & probably working beings the crappy x99 asus ws-3.1 MoBo did not blow it out to when it blew itself up via blowing up its own VRM's on first boot.....
