In this video about the anxiety caused by masking, I am looking at the neurobiological effects (on our nervous system and body) of having no facial clues as to whether we are safe or not. This understanding is based on the work of Stephen Porges who developed Polyvagal theory. In a time of trauma such as we are now in (but coming out of hopefully) having to wear face masks is both too little too late in my opinion and is creating huge anxiety for many people which have far larger consequencs for society at large than the virus itself.
It cuts us off from a vital source of information on relational safety - the face. The facial expressions, crinkly eyes, smiley mouth and voice of others helps us all to feel grounded and that we are unable to access these cues successfully may add to past trauma to make us feel very panicky.
Here is describe what is going on and how to overcome it using a body based technique called havening.
