It amazes me how many recording sessions Herbert conducted for Victor—about 90, if I counted correctly. According to the ledgers, he orchestrated and conducted nine “takes” of this between 1911-1917, and returned to the Camden studios in May 1918 to record this and one additional “take.” The lyricist Irving Caesar, whom Herbert befriended, recalled that he had three scoring “desks”—one at which he could stand and write, another at which he could sit and write, and a third that fit across his bed.
