All that custom hardware, sheet metal bent into fantastic shapes, high speed differential serial (CANBUS,) GPS, touch screen, and yet they can't software worth using. It baffles me how all car makers can get it so wrong

The first board you took apart would be your XM radio add on board. Freqs are wrong for GPS and the case had an XM ID on it.

Wish everyone used an electric screwdriver for their tear down videos. I'm not saying I've grown tired of watcing people slowly working screws out manually. Let's say it has lost its enchantment over the years.

Remembering when I was very young and was such fun to disassemble and discover. Then one day I asked, why not just fix it? Have not stopped for over 70 years now.

Over the past 25 years, Panasonic and Fujitsu made most of Toyota’s car audio. I just ended a 45 year career with Panasonic.

I have a used heatsink on my bench to wipe a bit of compound on parts that are hard to read. Can even occasionally use it to read markings wiped off with a laser

Damn lucky it wasn't 8 individual networked modules and that all your HVAC controls weren't built into the screen!

Car must be pretty old to still work without the nav/entertainment unit. Newer cars need all those modules to be on the CAN bus to work.

AKM chip is most likely the DAC for the audio.

My wife owns a 2005 Beetle that she purchased new, and recently she wanted a big flat-screen infotainment system like the ones in today’s cars. Without exaggeration (even though it’s a no-name brand), I installed a brand new 9” touchscreen receiver with Apple CarPlay, navigation, a backup camera, and more—all for just under $200. What’s more, it came pre-installed in a new dash bezel to replace the factory single-DIN unit. If I had done this when the car was new, it would’ve easily cost thousands.
Thanks for the video!!

The first block wasn't GPS. It is classical SDARS stand alone receiver.

That radio is just a little different than my Zenith 6 tube job out of a 1950 Hudson. The Zenith still works though which is more than can be said about this one.
