The Rachel Maddow Show: Apocalypse Now?

OK, here's the gauntlet to the "Argh, he's a socialist" mongers....what "socialism" has Obama done so far? Milquetoast healthcare reform? Moderate wallstreet reform? Wanting to repeal Bush tax cuts to help the economy? Cutting taxes for the middle class? What has he done that has been SOOOOOO socialist in his time in office? Name it. What has he done? He's been a liberal (sort of), he's made some decisions the GOP doesn't like, but where's the socialism he's being accused of? I'd like an answer

@queenblanche That's not accurate I know this was posted 8 months ago, but I need to correct this. Communism is a classless system. However, when human error comes into play, such as in Russia, it quickly changes from Communism to Facism, ruled by an all-powerful governing body. Communism is a system in which everyone does equal labor and is on equal ground sociologically. Of course this can't happen in real life, but that's what Communism is. You're describing a facist state, not communism.

@queenblanche Well, actually they did live a lot like the proletariat for a while after the revolution in Russia. They didn't go hungry or anything but Stalin's daughter Svetlana, for instance, took the tram to school without bodyguards every day. It started to change towards the end of the 30s as the political persecution escalated.

@AIReject I am describing communism as it's actually practiced. Call it communism, call it fascism, call it whatever mankind (meaning the "proletariat" in this case) usually comes out on the losing end. The government winds up owning everthing and the power rests in the hands of the few, meaning the communist elite in this case. Honestly, do you really know of any communist country in the world today where the people have total autonomy over their own lives without government influence?

@queenblanche I was discussing communism as communism is defined, which ahs no government or rulign power at all. If a country that claims to be communist has a rulign power or higher class, then it isn't communism.

@AIReject Then what do you call it? Defining communism is one thing, practical application is quite another. IF you don't have some form of government or accountability no matter what you call the form of government then society would quickly degenerate into chaos very quickly. If what you say is true, then which countries in the world today would you classify as "truly communist"? By the way, you never did answer my question: are you yourself a communist?

@queenblanche Current countries under the label "Communism" are actually facist dictatorships, which has its own classification. In true communism, there is no government, everyone is mostly equal and keep each other in check for the good of the society by doing whatever duties are required of them based on their skill set. Of course, because of human desires, this is only a utopian ideal. So yes, in that sense, I'm communist, but of course it can't actually happen. It doesn't work.

@AIReject That's just what I was trying to point out to you. Utopian ideas like communism, socialism, Naziism, fascism, etc.,could never work in real life because of what you yourself just pointed out; political philosophies like the foregoing generally ignore the nature of man. Man is always trying to exalt himself many times at the cost of his neighbor because there is always something deep within the heart of man that yearns for more. He doesn't care how he get 's there.

@queenblanche I was already well aware of that. Heck, Ie ven said it. I was just pointing out that even though they claim to be communist, they aren't, bacause they have a governmental body or ruler. There's no confrontation here. It just is. I don't even see why it's up for debate. It's just a matter of fact.

Rachel Maddow is an Oxford educated Rhodes Scholar (take note Christine O'Donnell) who has her pulse on what is right in American politics. Her nightly show contains the most well researched information I've ever seen or heard. The difference between the accuracy of her programme and the low brow, muck raking rubbish on the Fox Network is in a word QUALITY. Rachel cares about her audience enough to ensure that she delivers only the best in television journalism. Rachel is an American treasure.

Obama giving tax cuts to 95% of all American businesses and not even raising taxes on giant corporations beyond what Bush and the pubs set to expire --that's hardly socialist by any measure. Bush'd Tarp bill and no bid contracts... now THAT's socialism!

@MagnesDrachen13 You're more right than you think: He's not even repealing the Bush tax cuts! Just letting them expire as Bush and the Republicans intended...and not even THAT for 95% of Americans! As a middle class wage earner I PAY LESS TAXES UNDER OBAMA. So does Joe the Plumber! Exxon executives may pay a little more when the Bush tax cuts expire so that makes Obama a socialist! Republicans make no sense!

@christo930 "3rd world...They have all the government they could ever want, what they lack is industry." No that's completely wrong. Generally 3rd world countries have small non-intrusive government with little if any taxes. No labor laws, no environmental regulations. Plenty of industry if you want to work for 10 cents an hour or so. You got it 180 degrees backwards.

@christo930 One of the things that is making us bankrupt is that instead of paying for healthcare (like every other first world country) we pay bloated insurance companies who pay their executives gigantic salaries and bonuses and shareholders and marketing an 2 million a day on lobbyists etc and then give us back what's left over to pay doctor bills when their burocracy deems it appropriate. It's insane. We pay twice as much per capita as any other country for less.

That's like saying stop thinking of fire departments as someone to put out your fires. people should put out their own fires, build their own roads... test their own food for bacteria....Some things work better when we do them as a group than as individuals. @sinistar99 Insurance isn't for day to day expenses, it's for things that are unlikely to happen but are catastrophes when they do. So when you get the flu, you pay, when you have a heart attack or stroke or something, the insurance pays. Do you think there should be home maintenance insurance, where every little thing that goes wrong in your house gets paid for?

@sinistar99 That is because we have redefined what insurance is when it comes to health care. Like I said before, insurance is for catastrophic events, not everyday healthcare needs.

@sinistar99 Things fire depts., police, and such are justifiable tax-supported systems. A fire dept. comes to put out a fire not just to save the house, but to keep the fire from spreading through the neighborhood. Police are hired to enforce our laws thus keeping the public safe from criminals. Highways are also justifiable as they are needed by the public. BUT, taking over the health care, and auto industry borders on Socialism. Obama has shown his Socialist ideals in his speaches & writings

Now you can see the double standard here. Why doesn't Rachel invite some of the modern day soothsayers and crackpots on her show. Ask them about some of their predictions for the world.

@owatadikiam If you visit her website, it says that she lives with her partner Susan Mikula. Wherever you got the idea that she is married to a man and has two children is COMPLETELY wrong.

Keep them in constant fear: of other nations, of other races, of other religions, the end times, of the antichrist, of the guy who may set up the set up to the antichrist, of everything, EVERYTHING!! Fear all, believe only those who believe just like you (and not all of them, either) and everything will be great. Does anyone else see the idiocy required to believe in this?

@Georgie2047 I agree with Dr. Maddow, until she states that "none of us have the right to judge anyone else's religious beliefs". All religion is unsubstantiated nonsense, written by pre-modern, ignoramuses. Nonsense should not be respected and it certainly should be judged accordingly.

@Georgie2047 This was very well said and totally accurate. If more journalists were as devoted to getting to the bottom of the story, like Maddow and her team, I think our political landscape would look markedly different.

I can't believe entire societys are being built and influenced by religionto this very day. We will never progress as a species if we don't progress our way of thinking and cease to worship a deity which has never been proved to be real and is most likely not.

I wish she had shown some examples of why Obama isn't a socialist.

Ok, I read the whole "communism theory vs. practice" debate. I agree; on a national level, communism can't work, but in small groups, for a time, it can work; see hippies. Also some 1st century Christians.

I couldn't agree more about Rachel Maddow; she is a sign as good as any that journalism in America is not dead, although it is being hunted to extinction by the propagandist networks. She is one of the few remaining trustworthy sources on american politics in the US.

Yeah. I only dislike how she tends to have a tone of condescension. I get it has a place, even in reporting.. it still makes some have a hard time listening to what she is saying.
