Many of these towns were facing depopulation, economic decline, and the deterioration of cultural heritage. The project aims to protect their architectural beauty, history, and local traditions while boosting tourism and supporting local economies. By highlighting these hidden gems, it encourages sustainable development and revives community life in rural areas.
The 1 Euro House project was created to combat the decline and depopulation of small, rural towns in Italy, many of which were facing economic struggles and abandoned properties. These villages, like Gangi and others, saw a shrinking population as residents moved to urban areas or abroad for better opportunities. The project aimed to breathe new life into these towns by offering vacant, dilapidated houses for just 1 euro, with the condition that buyers commit to renovating the properties.
